Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Employee performs semi-skilled work alone or assists a skilled worker in performing routine tasks in the maintenance and improvements of a State Park. Makes light repairs to buildings and other primitive structures, performs groundskeeping, cleans restrooms, performs other housekeeping, and assists in maintaining the overall quality of the park’s facilities.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

EQUIPMENT

Assists in the maintenance, care and cleaning of vehicles and equipment used throughout the park. Operates a variety of park vehicles (e.g., minivan, light pickup truck, small dump truck, medium SUV). Completes all necessary forms/records (e.g., automotive mileage sheets, fuel dispensing records). Operates a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) and its attachments, to perform a variety of tasks. Operates a riding mower to maintain lawns. Operates other light equipment as trained and as needed.

BUILDINGS / STRUCTURES

Builds simple forms for cement work using carpenter tools; mixes and places cement; finishes cement using mason tools; and lays stone and block walls. Site preparation before large projects, as well as site cleanup to finish projects, including the grading, seeding, and watering of new turf areas. Plants and maintains trees and shrubs. Paints and/or stains park buildings, signs, gates, etc. Makes minor routine repairs, as needed (e.g., replacing light bulbs, tightening furniture, replacing wall-mounted fixtures).

CLEANING / UPKEEP

Performs ground maintenance by mowing or cutting weeds or grass, using push mowers, trimmers, and blowers, as well as riding mowers or other light equipment. Removes branches and debris, using rakes, blowers, non-powered cutting tools, and powered cutting tools. Digs holes and ditches. Cleans and supplies restrooms. Performs other general housekeeping duties as necessary, throughout all the park’s buildings. Loads and moves materials in utility vehicles, dump trucks, or pickup trucks. Cleans grills, pavilions, picnic tables, and other spaces for the public. Cleans out gutters, drains, culverts, and other stormwater installations. Removes litter found in park and assists in waste collection throughout the park (i.e., collecting bagged garbage/recyclables and transporting them to the park’s dumpsters). Maintains a clean work environment. All tools must be cleaned and stored properly daily as well as the work site during any repair, renovation, or construction. Tool inventories will be maintained and updated as per center procedures. Materials stored must be done so in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and protected from any unnecessary damage.

SAFETY

Actively participates and supports the park's Safety and Employee Right-To-Know programs. Follows all established safety rules and regulations pertaining to the task being performed, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Responsible for attending mandatory safety meetings and trainings. Responsible for the safe and proper use of all equipment, power tools, and hand tools.

COMMUNICATIONS / PUBLIC RELATIONS

Assists park visitors and disseminates information in a friendly, helpful manner. Operates A two-way radio in accordance with proper procedure.

Essential Functions

 1. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the basic/regular upkeep of the park’s facilities.
 2. Assists salaried maintenance staff in the completion of improvements and projects.
 3. Reads and comprehends various equipment manuals, schematics, blueprints, site plans, maps, etc.
 4. Communicates effectively, often utilizing various forms of communication (e.g., telephone, radio)
 5. Takes an active role in the park’s Safety Program (e.g., safety meetings, JSAs, use of PPE, equipment checks) and complete assigned training
 6. Climb and work from a ladder, scaffolding, or roof
 7. Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades involved.
 8. Lifts and moves objects weighing 60 pounds or less
 9. Legally and safely operate a motor vehicle.
 10. Works outdoors in all weather conditions and can traverse rugged and uneven terrain on foot
