Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Performs public safety work observing and monitoring the swimming pool area at Blue Knob State Park to maintain order and to ensure visitor safety. In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Observes and monitor activities at the swimming pool along with the surrounding walkways, restroom, and dressing stockade. Remain alert at all times while in the guard chair. Scan swimming area for potential problems and be prepared to respond to assist visitors. Be able to recognize when swimmers are in distress or need assistance. Respond accordingly. Report all rescues, accidents, or incidents to the lifeguard supervisor and/or park manager as soon as possible. Administer first aid, artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including adult, infant, and child CPR, to injured park visitors. Summon additional medical personnel for assitance when needed. Provide assistance to park patrons and explain park rules and regulations. Request assistance from park ranger and/or park manager to deal with patrons who may not comply when informed of park rules. Inspect the condition of buoys, floats, ropes, first aid supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition. Notify lifeguard supervisor and/or park manager of deficiencies. Inspect swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use. Correct safety deficiencies when possible. Request assistance from park maintenance supervisor/staff and/or park manager if needed. Prepare and submit written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents. Complete necessary forms and ensure they are turned into the lifeguard supervisor, park office staff or park manager. Forms include daily log, first aid log, pool inspection sheet, water quality forms and any other as directed by the supervisor. Maintain a detailed knowledge of the DCNR Lifeguard Manual and has a thorough knowledge of its contents. Participate in orientation and training sessions for lifeguards to review Bureau of State Parks policy and procedures, learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates. Test water samples for pH and residual chlorine, read meters, and record information. Report the need for chemicals and adjustments, and reporting malfunctions or breakdowns to park maintenance supervisor and/or park manager. Perform incidental maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use. Daily work may include, but not be limited to litter pickup around pool and associated buildings, cleaning restrooms and vacuuming the pool. Maintain the lifeguard station and ensure it is organized and clean at all times. Maintain lifeguard equipment and ensure it is in working condition. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and addresses the issue as necessary. Calls DCNR Ranger and/or Park Manager for assistance with law enforcement situations. |
