This is a professional forestry position within the Clear Creek Forest District. The main function of this position is to provide technical assistance, information, and education to the private forest landowners of Lawrence and Mercer Counties and build partnerships and relationships within the designated program area. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. RURAL & COMMUNITY FORESTRY Rural and Community Forestry Program: To promote forest stewardship in Lawrence and Mercer Counties; review and approve completion of any funded forestry practices; needs determination and technical assistance; attend required/requested meetings of cooperating agencies and conservation organizations; present forest resource management advice to landowners, local, state and federal cooperating agencies. Providing professional forestry leadership, advice, and guidance to private and public forest landowners, federal, state, and local government agencies, and other conservation groups within the assigned area. Use various media outlets to communicate and distribute forestry education and information to the public Receive and respond to requests from forest landowners for assistance. This work may include, but is not limited to: woodland exams, timber stand analysis, written management plan advice, tree planting recommendation, wildlife habitat recommendation, erosion and sedimentation recommendations, timber harvesting recommendations, diagnose and conduct forest health surveys and conduct other various site visit recommendations. Provide urban and community forestry advice to municipalities and organizations. Administer federal and state forestry programs. Maintain working relations and serve as the Bureau of Forestry liaison to the local Conservation Districts, RC&D, PSU Extension, NRCS, FSA office, and other partnering agencies within the district. Compile, analyze and interpret forest inventory and forestry data. Develop and present forestry information for all educational programs to schools and the public. Maintain working relationship with local forestry industry and consulting foresters and provide information and trainings as requested. Maintain an office which includes an inventory of materials, completing required time and activity records, maintain current file system, meeting vehicle maintenance requirements, and performing necessary office duties; such as report typing, screen calls, etc. FOREST FIRE PROTECTION Perform forest fire pre-suppression and suppression duties; such as assisting with training and educational programs; dispatcher duties, aerial reconnaissance flight to detect fires and direct suppression efforts; respond to and assist or direct fighting forest fires. These responsibilities cover all land within the District. Assist the District in all aspects of prescribed fire within the range of specific qualifications. Must become and maintain an active Forest Fire Warden status. STATE FOREST RESOURCE & RECREATION MANAGEMENT As directed, assisting with State Forest Management activities to include forest exams; analyzing and interpreting data; preparing plans; determining treatments; developing proposals, laying out, marking, preparing documents for, and administering timber sales and regeneration projects; estimating timber damages and preparing invoices; consulting with Silviculture Section staff; planning and overseeing volunteer, youth corps, and other projects; designing, laying out, and constructing recreation trails and infrastructure; developing and overseeing recreation agreements and activities; consulting with Recreation Section staff. FOREST HEALTH PROGRAM As directed, assisting with Forest Health Program activities to include monitoring insect, disease, and non-native invasive plant populations and impacts; participating in suppression, surveillance, ground checking, and herbicide application activities; consulting with Forest Health Program specialists. Must become and maintain status as a PA licensed pesticide applicator. STATE FOREST PUBLIC CONTACT Serve as a State Forest Officer – enforcing State Forest Rules & Regulations on State Forest land as defined in Act 18; patrolling State Forest land, as directed; assisting State Forest users when requested; educating the public on the Bureau of Forestry mission, rules and regulations, District goals and objectives, and District policies. SEARCH & RESCUE PROGRAM As directed, assisting with Search & Rescue on State Forest and Park land to include training and functioning as a Search Manager; participating in SAR mock exercises; mentoring staff in SAR training and preparedness; preparing and maintaining a SAR readiness pack and District SAR kit. Other duties as directed. |
