Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is a licensed and trained automotive and heavy equipment mechanic that performs a variety of analytical, preventative maintenance, and repair duties for a fleet of construction equipment, trucks, automobiles, and hand tools.

Perform skilled maintenance and repair work on all types of automotive vehicles and motorized maintenance equipment. The work performed may include hydraulic, electrical, heating, cooling, and exhaust systems as well as on manual and automatic transmissions. The employee performs state vehicle inspections for all assigned pieces of equipment that require it, completes required work orders, charges time accurately, and reports all equipment accidents or damage immediately.

The employee carries out the following job tasks under the direct supervision of the Mechanic Supervisor.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Maintains and repairs trucks, automobiles, buses, vans, small engines, groundskeeping equipment and other motorized equipment by using specialized tools and electronic equipment.

Work is directed by written work orders or oral instructions given by the Mechanic Supervisor in order to meet all State and Federal Standards and keep the equipment in a safe and operating condition.

Repairs and overhauls vehicles such as cars, trucks, and tractors, carries out maintenance and repairs on equipment such as riding mowers, tractors and front-end loaders.

Repairs and replaces shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, and other parts.

Balances wheels and checks for proper alignment, makes minor body repairs, and overhauls and tests alternators and electrical components on vehicles and equipment.

Carries out a preventive maintenance program on vehicles, equipment and parts.

Performs automotive mechanical diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes, repairs and replaces engine sub-assemblies, repairs and adjusts the cooling, suspension, electrical, heating and air-conditioning components, and maintains fuel, brake, steering and transmission systems.

Carries out official state inspections for safety and emissions on vehicles as assigned, performs repairs to ensure compliance with specifications, road tests vehicles, fills out inspection stickers and affixes to vehicles, and completes State Inspection Records and related inspection paperwork.

Identifies equipment problems using diagnostic equipment and procedures to determine problems, repair methods, procedures, tools, and parts to be used.

Repairs and maintains motorized hand equipment such as chain saws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers and trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles.

Reports missing parts or broken equipment as necessary.

Repairs, constructs, welds and/or rebuilds all types of vehicles, mowers, spreaders, snow plows, weed-eaters, small engines, and motorized equipment in order to keep equipment in good working condition to reduce replacement costs.

Spray paints vehicles and equipment as directed by the Mechanic Supervisor.

Performs Preventive Maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment that is used by and serviced by the Transportation and Maintenance Department. Records are kept of all work performed and parts used in the repair/maintenance of equipment. All work will be monitored by the Automotive Equipment Foreman to make sure the work shall be done in a safe manner.

Must have a PA State Inspection License to inspect state owned vehicles in accordance with the inspection laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Performs road service on all vehicles on/off grounds. When needed, assigns and dispatches automotive vehicles.

When needed, operates and cleans equipment and vehicles to provide a safe environment for staff and individuals.

When the Mechanic Supervisor is absent, keeps records and purchases repair parts from local vendors in the repair of vehicles and equipment to maintain continuous operation of the Transportation Department. Must have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and constructive working relationships with all Ebensburg Center staff and individuals.

Essential Functions

 10. Be able to be fitted, trained and use respirator protection for dealing with hazardous materials encountered by the trade.
