Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Under the general supervision of a UCC Building Inspector Supervisor, Bureau of Occupational and Industrial Safety, performs building and structure inspections and enforcement for compliance with the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) and other applicable state laws and regulations.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs inspections of industrial, commercial, assembly, educational, health care, institutional and other public and private buildings to determine compliance with building, accessibility, fire safety, energy conservation and other health and safety laws and regulations.

Inspects construction and/or alteration of buildings and structures for conformance with state approved plans and applicable laws and regulations.

Conducts audits and performs plan reviews of municipal code programs to determine compliance with the accessibility requirements of the UCC.

Reports unsafe conditions and violations and conducts follow-up inspections of buildings and structures to insure compliance of reported deficiencies.

Prepares detailed reports of inspections and investigations.

Investigates work locations of public sector employees to determine compliance with applicable state laws and regulations and to determine if applicable conditions, structures, equipment and materials are safe and healthful.

Requires correction of conditions found to be unsafe or not in compliance with applicable plans, laws and regulations. Recommends issuance of stop work orders.

Represents the Department of Labor and Industry at District Justice hearings dealing with the enforcement of corrective orders. Questions witnesses where the defendant is represented by legal counsel.

Communicates with District Attorney’s offices and local police to obtain search warrants.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with contractors, architects, engineers, building owners and other code officials.

Performs lead work for UCC Building Inspector Trainees.

Attends Board meetings, staff meetings and training sessions as required.

Maintains daily records of activities and submits reports on a timely basis.

Maintains required UCC Certifications in the following six disciplines: UCC Building Inspector, UCC Electrical Inspector, UCC Mechanical Inspector, UCC Plumbing Inspector, UCC Energy Inspector, and UCC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner.

Performs related work as required.

Determines compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Inspects buildings and issues Occupancy Permit if in compliance. Interprets laws, regulations and procedures for customers.

Experience:

Successful completion of the UCC Building Inspector Trainee Program:

Two years of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, or other public use buildings for compliance with building and safety codes;

or

Three years of building construction work which included the performance of skilled trades duties in the electrical, structural, plumbing, or mechanical trades;

or

An equivalent combination of experience and training.
