Position Purpose:

FUNCTION:

Responsible for managing the Therapeutic Recreation Department of the Danville State Hospital. The department provides therapeutic recreation services to meet the interests and needs of consumers in support of the overall institutional goals of maintaining a safe, clean, comfortable environment and optimum physical and emotional care for those in need of mental health treatment. These duties are carried out under the supervision of the Chief Social Rehabilitative Executive.

WORK EFFORT STATEMENTS:

Serves as the leader of the entire Therapeutic Recreation Department in conjunction with Therapeutic Activities Supervisor(s) to plan, direct, coordinate and ensure the delivery of assigned services throughout the facility and to ensure that Therapeutic Recreation Services meet the interests and needs of individual consumers and comply with all regulations including DOH / CMS standards. Support patients in developing healthy leisure skills, coping strategies, socialization skills, and community reintegration skills.

Monitor operations to ensure that therapeutic activities services meet CMS/ DOH standards for provision of services, documentation, etc. Ensure that standards of professional behavior are maintained within the department.

Maintain open and clear communication, orally and in writing, with other hospital departments regarding therapeutic activities/ leisure activities both inside and outside of the hospital. Assist staff in planning appropriate levels of patient supervision to ensure safety, planning transportation as needed and monitor activities.

Evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic activities and leisure activities provided by the department. Ensure activities are recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and aligned with the patients’ goals, as well as providing a variety of activities to meet the needs, interests, and functional levels of all patients. Assess patient needs and adapt activities accordingly.

Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate therapeutic activities programs to improve, enhance, and retain participants highest levels of personal, psychosocial, and physical functioning. Monitors active treatment groups and leisure activities to ensure the needs of a changing consumer population are met and are conducted in an adequate amount in a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment.

Participate in Quality Assurance/ Risk Management Committee by establishing goals, monitoring/ evaluating quality assurance activities, and reporting at the QAPI Committee. Evaluate program effectiveness through patient outcomes, participation data, patient satisfaction feedback, and quality improvement measures.

Contributes to policy/ procedure development and revision as applicable to the SRS and therapeutic activities department. Provide interpretation and guidance to staff regarding policy updates/ changes.

Perform the full range of supervisory duties, including hiring, orientation, regular supervisory conferences and/or department meetings, establishing performance standards, evaluating performance, and disciplinary action if necessary. Collaborate with the Therapeutic Activities Supervisor(s) to manage scheduling with the department, including assigning work, approving leave, authorizing overtime, etc. to meet the needs of the hospital.

Guide and supervise staff on assessing and providing for the therapeutic activities and leisure activities needs of the patients. Provide recommendations regarding patient engagement, social functioning, coping skills development, and leisure interests. Promote patient participation in structured recreational, educational, creative arts, wellness, and community-building activities.

Participate as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team. Collaborate with the IDT to develop individualized treatment plans goals related to therapeutic activities. Supervise the development and implementation of individualized treatment goals as they relate to patient assessments and therapeutic activities services.

Evaluate staff training needs and provide opportunities for staff growth to ensure that standards of patient care are maintained. Ensure that departmental staff maintain competency in psychiatric care, de-escalation techniques, patient safety and trauma informed care. Provide on-going coaching and professional development.

Ensure documentation standards are maintained per regulation and policy by ensuring thoroughness and timeliness of required documentation by regularly reviewing the documentation of therapeutic activities staff. Maintain appropriate documentation of therapeutic activities and patient participation.

Monitor patient behavior during activities and respond appropriately to behavioral health crises in accordance with hospital policies. Monitor activity areas for safety and ensure equipment is maintained and in good working condition.

Demonstrate effective leadership, professionalism, and collaboration across disciplines.

Work is performed with a considerable degree of independence under the general direction of the Chief Social Rehabilitative Executive.

Consults with Administrative Support Services as needed related to large hospital events, purchasing items, and for staffing / disciplinary needs within the Therapeutic Recreation Department.

Essential Functions
