Position Purpose:

The Lifeguard Supervisor directs the activities of lifeguards and performs duties in public safety work, maintaining order, and performing related maintenance, custodial and clerical duties at Frances Slocum State Park Swimming Pool, under the supervision of the Park Manager.

SUPERVISION - Arranges the schedule of lifeguards and submits to the Park Manager two weeks in advance. Maintains work hours on lifeguards by submitting accurate daily sheets to the Park Office. Directs the day to day activities of the lifeguard staff, insuring adherence to the rotational schedule. Ensures assigned rotation schedules and work rules are being followed by all lifegurds and reports problems to the Park Manager in a timely manner. Trains lifeguards and participates in training, in accordance with the Bureau of State Park's Lifeguard Manual. Conducts safety inspections of pool area and reports deficiencies to the Park Manager.

Patrol, observe, direct, and monitor activities at the Frances Slocum State Park swimming pool.

Remain alert at all times at assigned post. Scan swimming area to prevent accidents and be prepared to respond to visitors in the event of an emergency. Recognize when swimmers are in distress or need assistance. Report all rescues, accidents, or incidents to the supervisor immediately and summon help as deemed necessary.

Administer first aid, artificial respiration and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including adult, infant, and child CPR, to injured park visitors.

Enforce compliance with the Bureau of State Parks' swimming rules and regulations following prescribed guidelines and procedures. Provide assistance to park patrons and explain park rules and regulations. Advises rangers of violations of park rules and regulations.

Inspect and maintain the condition of buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition.

Inspect swimming area, checking for unsafe conditions to ensure they are safe for public use.

Prepare and submit written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents. Completes necessary forms and ensures they are turned into the park office or proper authority. Forms include daily log, first aid log, pool inspection sheet, water quality forms and any other as directed by the supervisor.

Retain a detailed knowledge of the DCNR Lifeguard Manual and have a thorough knowledge of its contents.

Participate in orientation and training sessions for Lifeguards to review Bureau of State Parks policy and procedures, learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates.

Takes pool water samples, read meters, and record information. Report the need for chemicals and adjustments, and reporting malfunctions or breakdowns to supervisor.

Perform basic maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe and clean for public use. Daily work may include, but not limited to litter pickup around pool and bathhouses, cleaning/ inspecting bathhouses and vacuuming/scrubbing pool. Maintain the lifeguard station and ensure it is organized and clean at all times. Maintain lifeguard equipment and ensure it is in working condition.

Operate base and portable radios using established radio procedures.

The employee continuously monitors the swimming area, determines when swimmers are in distress and need assistance, and takes necessary action to assist. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and addresses the issue as necessary.

Work is assigned both verbally and in writing on a daily basis by the Park Manager with routine taskes assigned as standard operating procedure. Work is reviewed periodically for timliness, accuracy, and compliance to Bureau policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

 1. Supervise and schedule lifeguards effectively.
 2. Evaluate employee performance and prepare employee performance evaluation reports.
 3. Vigilantly monitor pool for extend length of time and recognize swimmers in distress.
 4. Performs rescues and administers emergency care and assessment as trained and necessary. React quickly and calmly in emergency.
 5. Communicate effectively with general public and DCNR personnel.
 6. Satisfactorily complete and conduct the Bureau of State Parks Lifeguard Assessment.
 7. Participate in orientation/training sessions for Lifeguards/Lifeguard Supervisors.
 8. Clean and maintain assigned work areas.
 9. Understand, explain, and enforce Bureau/Park policies, rules, and regulations.
 10. Maintains Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certifications for approved vendors.
