Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Operates equipment such as, but not limited to, fuel truck, rubber-tire excavator (Gradall), milling machine, oil distributor, pugmill, stone chipper for surface treatment operations, track excavator with a gross vehicle weight of 25,500 pounds or more, a large paver, a truck/trailer combination to haul assigned equipment, a snow plow, backhoe, tractor mower with an extendable hydraulic mower or ditcher attachment, bulldozer, grader, rubber tire or steel wheel roller weighing 10 or more tons, paver, self-propelled road widener, conveyor loader, self-propelled sweeper, self-propelled pavement breakers, self-propelled post drivers, or front loader or hi-lift with a bucket capacity of four and a half cubic yards or more, used for construction or maintenance work. Maintains required Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake restriction removed and the tanker endorsement; and all other endorsements needed to operate equipment on which trained and certified, including a minimum of heavy truck loader. Properly performs and documents all required pre-and post-operations checks in accordance with Department and legal requirements on a daily basis. Performs all necessary field adjustments to permit safe operation and minimize wear. Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance work on equipment which includes cleaning and servicing equipment. Demonstrates operation of assigned equipment to other employees. Assists Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics in making minor repairs to equipment. Maintains equipment records. Operates a variety of manual and foot controls, utilizes seat belts, and installs and removes tire chains on dual wheels. Performs a variety of manual laboring duties using both motorized and non-motorized hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, lutes, chain saws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers and trimmers, routers, patching machines, and heating kettles; selects and uses tools properly for job to minimize wear and breakage; reports missing or broken equipment. Maintains a safe work environment for self, co-workers, and the motoring public by following proper safety procedures and using proper protective equipment. Makes visual observations, manual adjustments, and reports findings in both written and oral format. Maintains awareness of work area by helping self and others avoid risks and hazards. Properly reports all personal injuries and equipment accidents immediately to include near-misses, provides first aid when appropriate, and ensures prompt treatment to minimize risk of further injury. Serves as a lead worker or an acting highway foreman when needed. Works independently or under assigned foreman. Completes daily payroll for self or crew when serving as an acting highway foreman. Provides instruction on the operation of equipment to other employees and formal classroom training. Implements the environmental protection requirements of maintenance work activities performed by the employee. Also fulfills the environmental management requirements designated for this title in environmental training programs. Performs other related duties as required. Safety: 1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. Succession Planning: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Department Green Plan Policy: Commit to following the Department’s Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department’s Green Plan Policy shall be documented in the employee’s performance review. Fair Labor Standards Act: Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0-hour day. |

Requirements Profile: Identify any specific experience or requirements, such as a licensure, registration, or certification, which may be necessary to perform the functions of the position. Position-specific requirements should be consistent with a Special Requirement or other criteria identified in the classification specification covering this position. Example: Experience using Java; Professional Engineer License Experience: 1. Valid Class A or B Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. 2. Valid Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) must be obtained within the probationary period and must be maintained while employed in this job. 3. Valid operation certifications for at least two pieces of equipment, during probationary period. 4. Successfully complete and remain current with the “Transportation Equipment Operator Instructor” and “Acting Highway Foreman” training. 5. Certain positions may be required to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. 6. Certain positions may require a valid Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H). 7. Successfully pass a practical exam in the operation of equipment with a manual transmission. 8. Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations. Licenses, registrations, or certifications: 1.
