Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Functions as the responsible charge operator for wastewater treatments plants that also supply community wastewater treatment services. This includes, but is not limited, Pioneer Inc. Makes process control decisions regarding plant operation. Develops standard operating procedures to be used by others to implement process control decisions. Operates and maintains wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment and the collection and conveyance systems in a wastewater treatment plant to control flow and processing of wastewater. Observes variations in operating conditions and reads meters, gauges, and test results to determine load requirements. Collects water samples and performs chemical tests to determine pH level, chlorine residual, settleable solids in the influent and effluent, and dissolved oxygen levels of the sewage effluent. Adds chemicals, such as ammonia, chlorine, or lime, to disinfect and deodorize water and other liquids. Records data on plant operations, equipment maintenance, personnel attendance, and meter and gauge readings and reports required information to regulatory officials. Inspects plant equipment and performs repairs, adjustments, and routine preventive maintenance. Interacts with Department of Environmental Protection staff on permit issues. Travels to various field sites/neighboring parks to operate and maintain wastewater treatment plants. Participates in classroom, online and on-the-job training programs in wastewater treatment plant operation principles. Operates chlorinators, digestors, aerators, motors, pumps, compressors, filters, valves and related wastewater treatment equipment according to established processes. Responsible for operation and maintenance of various collection and conveyance systems. Participates in safety training related to procedures for working in confined spaces. Participates in the inspection and cleaning of settling tanks, sludge beds, lagoons, and other components of wastewater treatment plants. Serves as the primary for testing of the water systems for leakage. Reads computerized system output screens and meters, records findings on a daily chart, and assists with interpreting results of readings and observations. Able to repair, rebuild and replace E One pump. Able to repair and rebuild Chicago Pump – Vertical Pedestal Mount. Able to repair, rebuild, and replace Gorman Rupp Lift Station motors. Able to troubleshoot and repair/replace various wastewater and water system control circuits. Performs routine inspections and maintenance of plant equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance of equipment and makes repairs and adjustments to equipment. Attends training courses, trainings, and other programs necessary for certification by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Systems Operators. Performs general maintenance, grounds keeping and repair work. This includes but is not limited to plumbing, electrical carpentry, and masonry. This individual will work as part of the maintenance team to maintain and improve the 400+ structures throughout the park. Since this employee primarily deals with water and wastewater, he/she will be expected to have extensive knowledge and practical application of plumbing, electrical, and small motor and pump repair and rebuilding. Individual will be the primary person maintaining operational plumbing in the many restrooms and shower houses throughout the park; winterizing all park facilities and bringing those back on-line in the spring; installing toilets and hot water heaters and tanks; re-plumbing sinks, showers, entire buildings; using electric snake to clear clogged drains; installing French drains and sump pumps; and rebuilding any water related pumps. This position also needs to have extensive knowledge of electrical systems which includes installation of receptacles, breakers, light fixtures, and e-phase electrical services. Operates Commonwealth-owned motorized vehicles including automobiles and light trucks as necessary. May be required to assist in mowing grasses, hazardous tree removal, snow removal, raking beaches, and/or cleaning of park buildings. Required to operate a variety of equipment. Performs related work as required. |

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature. This position has responsible charge and maintains plant operations to process wastewater in an environmentally safe and efficient manner according to standard operating procedures and regulatory requirement for large and complex plants and plants that supply community wastewater treatment services. Work involves operating and maintaining motors, pumps, aerators, filters, digestors, chlorinators, flow meters and related equipment to control the flow and processing of wastewater; sustaining biological processes by adding air and nutrients to achieve natural self-purification processes, including coagulation of solids, oxidation, and nitrification; performing chemical tests of plant influent and effluent; and documenting and maintaining data regarding plant operations for quality assurance purposes and required submission to regulatory officials. Duties may include assigning and demonstrating operation and maintenance tasks to other staff assigned to wastewater treatment plants. Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by a park maintenance supervisor or park manager. |
