Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position performs a variety of tasks relating to the maintenance, operations, and protection of facilities, roads, trails, lands, and other infrastructure located within the Weiser Forest District. This position performs sub-journey level maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment, working alone or assists skilled worker in performing routine tasks. This position will also assist in the suppression of wildland fires.

Description of Duties:

This position performs a variety of tasks relating to the maintenance, operations, and protection of facilities, roads, trails, lands, and other infrastructure located within the Weiser Forest District. This position performs sub-journey-level maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment, working alone or assisting a skilled worker in performing routine tasks. This position will also assist in the suppression of wildland fires.

Main Duties:

• Buildings

o Maintains and repairs buildings and other facilities using tools relating to carpentry, masonry, electrical,
plumbing, painting, and other building trades.
o Ensures that routine maintenance and minor repairs are completed regularly
schedule (e.g., changing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, replacing paper and other personal hygiene supplies in restrooms, etc.)
Operating a forklift, man lift, pallet jack, or other equipment for the movement of materials or maintenance of buildings and equipment.
o Performs general housekeeping and sanitary tasks in the upkeep of buildings and other facilities.
-Builds doors; lays linoleum; makes repairs to floors; takes out and replaces screens and repairs screens as needed; replaces broken windows, sash weights; and repairs door checks and locks.
- Mixes cement and plaster; helps to lay blocks, bricks, and pour cement forms; and makes minor plastering repairs to drywall.
-Roofing/siding installation or repairs on district buildings.
- Be able to read and understand schematics, blueprints, and diagrams.
• Grounds Maintenance

o Performs general grounds maintenance, including but not limited to mowing, cutting, pruning, and trimming grass, weeds, shrubs, and trees.
o Assists with the maintenance and establishment of turf, trees, shrubs, and other landscaping projects.
o Ensures that the area around buildings and other facilities is clean. These duties include picking up litter
and trash, sweeping walks and pathways, and cleaning drains, grills, and similar devices as required.

• Roads and Trails

o Assists with the construction, improvement, and maintenance of roads and trails as directed.
o Cleans leaves and other debris from road and trail surfaces, bridges, ditches, and culverts as directed.
o Assists with the construction and repair of headwalls on bridges and culverts.
o Operates trucks, farm tractors, and other vehicles that do not require special licensing or certification to
mow, cut, and maintain roadsides, roads, parking areas, trails, and other similar areas.

Tools and Equipment

o Does scheduled or routine maintenance and minor repairs to vehicles and other equipment.
o Services and does minor repairs to hand tools, power tools, and small electric and fuel-powered equipment, following the methods, materials, and tools appropriate for the task.
o Cleans the interior and exterior of vehicles and other equipment on a routine schedule.
o Ensures that all tools and equipment are stored in their appropriate location and that work areas are clean.
o Informs supervisor of all observed needs for repairs and maintenance to buildings and other infrastructure,
equipment, tools, etc.

Other Assigned Duties:

• State Forest Management

o Performs a variety of tasks relating to timber management, recreation, and related state forest programs as
directed by the supervisor.
o Assist with regeneration projects. This includes, but is not limited to, deer fence construction and maintenance, herbicide project, tree planting, seed collection, and site preparation.

• Forest Fire Protection:

o Performs a variety of duties and tasks to prevent and control wildland fires when directed by supervisor.
o Understands and follows rules, regulations, and policies relating to fire suppression.
o Performs assigned duties and serves as crew boss during fire suppression activities when directed.
o Operates fire control tools and equipment.
o Informs the supervisor or the appropriate individual of observed fire hazards.
Function as a Commonwealth-employed Forest Fire Warden

Other Duties:

• Assist with other projects and perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.
• Attend training meetings.
• Perform duties in a safe, organized, and efficient manner.
• Be respectful and courteous when dealing with the public, volunteers, and our cooperators at all times.
• Assist with search and rescue projects when directed.
• Assist with forest insect, disease, and other forest health-related projects when directed.
• Assist with other projects and perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.
. Ability to independently travel to job sites.

Essential Functions

 1. Physical ability to navigate uneven and steep terrain during daily work and wildland firefighting activities
 2. Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trade
 3. Ability to perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude
 4. Ability to operate a motorized vehicle under a variety of weather and road conditions and recognize vehicle limitations.
 5. Ability to safely operate small electric & fuel powered gasoline tools & equipment (riding lawnmowers, chainsaws, portable pumps, electric drills)
 6. Ability to use hand tools such as shovels, forks, axes, saws, mechanic's tools, fire tools, tree marking paint guns
 7. Function on independent & team basis
 8. Ability to receive and understand directions, communicated effectively
 9. Ability to understand basic computer use for the submission of required reports and documents
 10. Participate in training programs.
