Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position supervises and instructs inmates in a structured classroom and on-the-job vocational barbering training program at SCI Coal Township.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Provide care, custody and control of inmates in a vocational trade program.

Instruct inmate barber students in the practices, methods and techniques of barbering in a classroom and on-the-job training situations.

Plan, develop and implement the barber vocational training program including curriculum development.

Provide barber services to the inmate population.

Instruct the proper use of razors, scissors, combs, brushes, and other tools and equipment used in the barber trade.

Initiate and maintain chemical inventories, as well as tool inventories.

Maintain tool control of all tools and related implements in the barber program.

Interview prospective student barber candidates and make recommendations for acceptance into the program.

Maintain enrollment and completion records for inmate student barbers, maintain progress records, and completes written evaluations.

Prepare inmate pay reports.

Requisition materials and supplies.

Search inmates and work area for contraband.

Perform other duties and/or related work as required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the barber trade
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
7. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
8. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
9. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
10. Maintain an active certificate as a Registered Teacher as issued by the State Board of Barber Examiners
11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the barber trade
12. Operate basic office equipment
13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
17. Visually observe inmates’ activities
18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
20. Travel as required

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Independently assigns, schedules, prioritizes, and documents work assignments for inmates enrolled in the vocational barbering training program.

Exercises technical independence in determining and ordering the tools and supplies needed to complete instruction and barbering provisions to inmates housed at the SCI.

Determines appropriate instruction practices, methods, and techniques which are subject to inspection by the State Board of Barber Examiners and the Division of Correction Education.

Corrections School Principal coordinates any special assignments.
