Position Purpose:

This position is responsible for assisting with the performance of actuarial analysis and participating in a training program to learn how to perform limited and basic life, accident and health actuarial analysis to ensure that the Bureau meets its statutory and regulatory obligations.

1. Participate in a training program designed to develop technical competence in the understanding and application of basic actuarial standards and procedures and Pennsylvania insurance laws related to the analysis of life, accident and health insurance rates, rating procedures, rating plans, schedules and rules.

2. As part of the training, assist with the review and analysis of life, accident and health insurance rates, rating procedures, rating plans, schedules and rules to determine whether they conform to statutory and regulatory requirements.

3. Review and approve or disapprove life, accident and health rate and/or rule filings under the direct supervision of the Bureau Director. Filings reviewed by an Associate 1 generally do not require an understanding of life and health ratemaking standards and procedures and/or Pennsylvania insurance laws. Instead, instruction is provided by the Bureau Director. Assist in the preparation of information and testimony to be used in administrative hearings and court proceedings.

4. Assist with research and reporting on insurance-related matters as necessary.

5. Assist with the administration of data calls.

6. Increase insurance and actuarial knowledge and skills through seminars, webinars, literature and other available resources.

7. Completes other related duties and projects assigned by the supervisor.

Decision Making:

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

The Actuary Supervisor assigns and prioritizes work. Work is conducted in accordance with the Actuary Supervisor's and Bureau Director’s prioritization and bureau procedures. This role works in coordination with and under the supervision of more senior actuarial staff and/or supervisor to disposition standard or routine filings depending upon bureau procedures and the Actuary Supervisor’s instructions. Supervisor provides input on progress through the training program.
