Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Performs public safety work participating in and supervising Lifeguards involved in patrolling, observing, directing, and monitoring the Little Buffalo Swimming Pool Complex to maintain order and to ensure visitor safety.

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Plans, organizes and assigns work to subordinates; prepares and signs subordinates’ performance evaluation reports; evaluates the training needs of subordinates and arranges for further education and training; demonstrates proper methods or techniques; and meets with subordinates to explain change to rules, regulations, policies and standards for subordinates.

Plans the work schedule for subordinates on a two-week basis. All schedules are required to be approved by Park Manager and posted no less than two weeks prior to the commencement of the schedule period. Approves or declines all requests for leave, early dismissals, call offs, and ensures that any staff shortages are adequately covered.

Supervises and participates in activities involving the rescue of swimmers in distress.

Administers first aid and/or CPR to injured state park visitors.

Enforces State parks rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Inspects swimming areas and safety equipment and supplies to ensure they are safe for public use.

Remains alert at all times at assigned post. Scans the swimming area to prevent accidents and be prepared to respond to visitors in the event of an emergency.

Ensures compliance with the Bureau of State Parks' swimming rules and regulations following prescribed guidelines and procedures.

Inspects, or supervises the inspection of, buoys, floats, ropes, first aid equipment and supplies, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in proper operating condition.

Inspects swimming areas by checking for unsafe conditions to ensure they are safe for public use.

Prepares and submits written reports and documents outlining swimming conditions, activities, and incidents.

Provides and participates in training sessions for Lifeguards to review and/or learn lifesaving and water safety practices, methods, and techniques, and to renew required swimming and/or first aid and CPR certificates.

Supervises and participates in the operation of a swimming pool by taking water samples, reading meters and recording information, reporting the need for chemicals and adjustments, and reporting malfunctions or breakdowns to superiors.

Supervises and performs incidental maintenance and custodial duties at a swimming area to ensure it is safe for public use.

Performs related work as required.

The employee assigns and reviews work for subordinate lifeguards and determines training needs. The employee continuously monitors the swimming area, determines when swimmers are in distress and need assistance, and takes necessary action to assist. The employee also monitors the swimming area for violations of the park/swimming area rules and addresses the issue as necessary.

Essential Functions

 6. Participate in orientation/training sessions for Lifeguards
 7. React quickly and calmly in emergency
 8. Understand, explain and enforce Bureau/Park policies, rules and regulations
 9. Maintains Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid certifications from approved vendors
