Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse, the Aide Trainee delivers direct consumer care using consumer-centered approaches and performs other related duties as assigned.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Nursing Process/Consumer Care:
•Uses age-specific, consumer-centered approaches in consumer interactions
•Reports consumer’s response to interventions
•Assists/supervises/instructs consumers in all activities of daily living (ADLs) e.g. bathing, shampooing/combing hair, trimmingnails, oral hygiene, eating, etc.
•Performs ADLs for the consumer, if consumer is unable
•Assesses consumers’ clothing and hygiene needs; dresses consumers in clean, seasonally appropriate clothing, completes andmaintains personal belongings inventory
•Reports changes in consumers’ conditions to the Registered Nurse
•Turns or positions consumers, assists with ambulation or mobility
•Escorts consumers on and off grounds for activities and medical appointments
.Conducts nursing programs per program description
•Monitors and supervises consumers during program and leisure activities
•Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressures; weighs consumers
•Uses standard precaution techniques, such as handwashing, per policy
•Assists with consumer identification as needed
.Assists consumers with maintenance of living space
Special Treatment Procedures:
•Provides nursing care for those consumers that may require special levels of observation, therapeutic use of physical restraintwhile adhering to hospital policy and physician's order.
•Responds to psychiatric emergencies, provides the consumer(s) with individual instruction, assistance, support as needed.Observes and reports changes in consumer behaviors. Utilizes therapeutic verbal techniques to address patient concerns and de-escalation. Utilizes approved physical intervention techniques/holds as directed/ordered.
•Provides and documents meals, fluids, toileting and exercise as needed and as outlined in DSH policy/procedure and PersonalCare Manual.
Emergencies/Medical interventions/Use of Medical Equipment:
•Responds to medical emergencies, announces medical emergency, takes appropriate actions for which specifically trained.These could include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, foreign body airway obstruction management, or otheremergency treatment procedures.
•Responds to disaster/emergencies, e.g., fires, earthquake, flood, hazardous materials incidents, utility interruptions ortransportation accidents; follows basic emergency procedures as contained in DSH policy/procedure/Hospital Safety Manual
•Uses appropriate equipment properly and safely; reports malfunctioning and/or inaudible alarm systems/equipment.
Competency Maintenance Activities:
•Attends and participates in ongoing DHS mandatory, hospital and departmental training programs: Response Training, CPR,
Fire Safety, Infection Control, Consumer Rights, Consumer Abuse, Drug-Free Work Place, Right to Know, etc.
•Attends inservices/training programs/and completes self-learning packages as required
•Identifies personal training needs
Oral and Written Communications:
•Interacts with consumers/families
•Writes/prints legibly
•Documents in Focus format and uses only approved abbreviations
•Reports/documents factual consumer information
•Provides accurate and legible written work/incident related statements (as required)
•Completes consumer accountability checks
•Maintains confidentiality of consumer information
•Reports problems accurately using the chain of command
•Reports/documents consumer incidents and employee work related accidents to the Charge
Nurse/Supervisor
•Keeps conversations free from discriminatory, abusive or sexually harassing comments
•Attends and participates in staff, committee, and Treatment team meetings as assigned
•Completes records/reports as assigned.
Is accepting and receptive to direction from Registered Nurse, supervisor and/or managers.
Maintains positive and constructive relationships with others. Needs and sensitivities of others are recognized.
Assignment Completion:
•Checks Daily Assignment Sheet for work to be completed
•Seeks clarification from the Registered Nurse
•Organizes work to be done; sets priorities
.Orders and maintains nursing supplies, equipment and forms
•Remains alert at all times and promotes consumer safety by completing written and oral assignments in accordance with DSHand Nursing polices/procedures
•Reports difficulties to the Charge Nurse
•Participates in the nursing team effort by assisting coworkers
Consumers’ Rights:
•Acts as a consumer advocate
•Recognizes and protects the rights of consumers
•Identifies, describes, and reports consumer abuse allegations
•Commits NO acts of consumer abuse
•Maintains confidentiality of consumer and hospital information
•Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment for consumers
Employee Conduct:
•Demonstrates professional conduct with coworkers/consumers
•Demonstrates ethical behavior in the work place
•Abides by the Governor’s Code of Conduct and DHS Personnel Regulations, policies and procedures, and DSH/Nursingpolicies and procedures
•Adheres to scheduled work hours, starting and ending times, rest and meal periods, etc.
•Complies with sign in/out procedures
•Maintains acceptable work attendance
•Adheres to established procedures for reporting off work providing required information and in accordance with mandated timeframes
•Has no unexcused instance of failure to contact the nursing supervisor or designee to notify him/her of absence
•Provides proper documentation of sick leave with Request for Leave (STD-330) on the first day of work following the absenceas required by established policy. If not produced on date of return for a valid reason, a firm date when it will be produced mustbe established and follow-up action taken accordingly. (Reference DHS Manual Section 7173.3b.2.a)
•Establishes a record of prudent/sensible paid leave use which does not show evidence of any discernible pattern or documentedinstance of failure to comply with Section 7173, Controlling Absenteeism, Time and Sick Leave Abuse
•Reports all work-related accidents
•Complies with leave/time request procedures
