Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The staff physician is an integral member of the Interdisciplinary Team and has responsibility for medical care and treatment of assigned individuals at Selinsgrove Center. Assumes responsibility for other individuals assigned as part of on-call rotations and when covering for other physicians. Attends Psychiatric Interdisciplinary meetings when called for and attends peer review meetings for other facilities.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

The physician provides medical/health care in accordance with current practice standards.

Duties include a wide range of professional and interdisciplinary functions including but not limited to, annual physical examination of each individual assigned. Laboratory, X-ray and other studies, as required, are ordered by this physician. Physicals are also done when individuals go on Therapeutic Leave, Trial Placement or are discharged. Documentation of interventions/non-interventions with rationale specified in the Medical Record, progress Notes, in SOAP format.

Monitors chronic illnesses focusing on restoring/maintaining health status. As tolerated, makes daily rounds to observe individuals during their activities. The general level of cleanliness and safety provided for individuals is observed at these times. Completes daily rounds for all individuals who are sick or for some reason require physician’s services. Progress Notes, in SOAP format, as to findings during Dispensary, and Orders concerning conditions found, are written as required. Writes Progress Notes on
those individuals assigned to their care at least every ninety (90) days. A determination of required level of care must be made at least every ninety (90) days.

By PA. Licensure regulations, the physician is expected to continue their education and obtain at least fifty (50) CME hours annually. Such education may be obtained within or outside the center.

This physician will become familiar with Medical Assistance (MA), as well as Community Medical Standards that apply to their activity within the unit. They will seek to maintain compliance with MA Standards and Community Medical Standards.

Serves on Center Committees as appointed. They will also participate in staff development as appropriate.

Makes the Clinical Services Director aware of individuals in the unit requiring intense or unusual medical care, hospitalizations, emergency evaluations and/or any significant change in the medical condition.

This physician will make direct contact with an individual’s family or guardian at the time of hospital admission, during serious illness, at the time of death and at any other time they feel this to be necessary.

At least quarterly, this physician meets with the Unit Psychologist, and appropriate Team members, to review all individuals who are receiving psychotropic medication.

Documentation of these meetings occurs in the unit chart according to Center policy/procedures.

This physician submits reports on the medical condition of individuals at least annually, and as requested by other Team members, or by outside facilities seeking information necessary for placement. This physician prepares cases for presentation in Peer Review as directed.

This physician is expected to complete on-call duties as scheduled and as tolerated.

Completes physicals on newly hired employees and other employees as required by Department of Human Services Regulations. Physicals will also be completed on Foster Grandparents as scheduled by Clinical Services Director and as required by Federal Guidelines for that program.

Other duties related to this position are completed as requested by the Health Services Director.

Job Duties:
Responsible for the medical care and treatment for individuals assigned to his care.
Provides annual physical examinations to each individual in the unit(s).

Orders laboratory, X-ray and other studies as needed.

Makes daily rounds to observe individuals during their activities, as tolerated.

Conducts daily Dispensary for all individuals who are sick or require physician's services.

Writes orders and conditions found.

Writes Progress Notes at least every ninety (90) days.

Continues their education up to at least fifty (50) hours annually.

Familiar with Medical Assistance Standards and applies this to their activity within the unit.

Keeps Clinical Services Director aware of individuals conditions when hospitalization is required, emergency evaluations or any significant change in the medical condition occurs.
Discusses complicated medical conditions with physician supervisor and accepts guidance on management of these patients.

Has direct contact with individual’s family or guardian when hospital admission is required. Admits hospital discharge patient's and reviews and reconciles their medications.

Meets with Team members regarding psychotropic drug usage and gives his comments about when to wean the psychotropic medications.

Completes on-call duties as scheduled.

Completes physical examination on newly hired employees.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other Center staff. Participates in Medical discussions during morning meetings.

Review and reconcile the medication list of the Individuals on regular basis and update the medical conditions in the chart in a regular basis.

Work is directly assigned by assignment to a particular unit. Work is reviewed by Supervisor at daily meetings, by rounds and chart reviews. If has any questions or concerns regarding a patient, generally consults Supervisor physician.
