Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This employee is a Health Care Supervisor that is responsible for direct supervision of the Registered Nurses and the Licensed Practical Nurses at the Ebensburg Center. The Registered Nurse Supervisor directs and evaluates the administration of nursing services to the individuals.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Reviews nursing assessments and health care plans on a continual basis to ensure that they are completed accurately and timely. Evaluates the effectiveness of the nursing care provided to the individuals served in relation to stated objectives, outcomes of care and standards of care to ensure that optimum care is provided.

Provides nursing expertise to subordinate nurses in the form of consultation, direct assistance, counseling and training on a continual basis. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team to provide nursing expertise. Attends meetings when needed and/or assigned to provide valuable medical information.

Monitors the medication administration practices of subordinate nurses ensuring that policies and procedures are followed.

Maintains quality assurance by auditing and monitoring the quality of the care provided in accordance with policies and procedures of the Ebensburg Center, standards of Nursing Practice, and Department of Health standards.

Visits hospitalized individuals to ensure that all of the individual’s needs are met while they are hospitalized. Schedules subordinate nurses to visit hospitalized individuals when necessary.

Provides input into the development of policies affecting the delivery of nursing care to the individual served. Develops, implements, interprets, evaluates and modifies nursing standards and procedures consistent with the departmental policy in conjunction with nursing administration.

Maintains certification as CPR Instructor. Monitors the CPR expiration dates of subordinate nurses to ensure that their certification is current. Instructs CPR classes when scheduled.

Provides orientation and training of all new professional nursing staff on all tours of duty. Initiates training recommendations for professional nursing staff and evaluates the effect of training on the overall performance of staff. Provides instruction, guidance, and counseling to professional staff and ensures that mandatory staff development programs are attended.

Assesses nursing staffing patterns, identifies staffing needs, and makes appropriate staff adjustments to maintain mandated staff quotas on a daily basis. Ensures adequate professional nursing coverage for each unit when assigned as the RNS of the shift.

Participates in continuing education programs to further enhance professional nursing skills.

Reports incidents that could lead to a certified investigation to proper personnel.

Orders supplies needed by the nursing staff for nursing units. Completes APRs for necessary supplies.

Follows Code of Ethics as interpreted by the American Nurses Association.

Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the administration of nursing care and treatment services. Assesses the nursing staff's implementation of nursing care and treatment plans.
Ensures the consistency of the nursing care plan with the individual's comprehensive treatment program plan.

Administers prescribed medications and treatments and receives physician's orders when necessary.

Monitors the quality of nursing care and treatments through observation and audits of charts, records and reports. Initiates action to correct deficiencies, as appropriate.

Updates nursing care charts, records and reports as required.

Serves as a resource person to nurses, direct care staff, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary team.

Directs the nursing staff care in areas such as, hygiene, infection control, quality assurance, improvement, risk management, and disease prevention education and counseling.

Ensures required immunizations and physical examinations are completed for the individuals of the Ebensburg Center.

Supervises and coordinates the implementation of active programming for individuals.

Prepares and signs subordinate employee work performance evaluation reports and discusses with employee. Encourages and recommends appropriate actions to sustain or improve work performance, as necessary.

Participates in interviews for prospective professional nursing staff and recommends job applicant selection or ranks applicants in terms of preferability for employment.

Monitors subordinate employees’ time and attendance. Initiates and follows through with disciplinary action when required. Receives, reviews, and approves or disapproves leave requests.

Conducts initial grievance investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee, and resolves complaints or recommends resolutions.

Communicates contractual and administrative rights and obligations to employees.

Participates in nursing and facility committee activities as assigned.

Maintains open communication with nurse manager, nurses, direct care staff, individuals, families, visitors, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

Implements and participates in the quality assurance, improvement, risk management and infection control activities.

Provides guidance for the promotion and maintenance of optimal health status for individuals, their families, and members of the health care system.

Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies nursing standards and procedures in conjunction with the facility nursing administration.

Reviews, evaluates, and coordinates planning for future admissions and pre-discharge planning to promote continuity of care in the community when necessary.

Communicates and coordinates with other members of the health care system.

Compiles, completes and distributes 24 hour facility report.

Updates skin breakdown notification form and facility 1:1 Enhanced Supervision list that is distributed along with 24 hour report via email to facility members on distribution list.

Performs related work as required/ assigned.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and the Director of Clinical Services. Initiative and independent judgment are exercised in discharging duties within framework of departmental and facility policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
