Position Purpose:

This is technical public safety work performing a variety of public safety duties and interpreting park rules and regulations designed to promote the safe utilization of recreational facilities at Presque Isle and Erie Bluffs State Parks.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs a variety of public safety duties to promote the safe utilization of recreational facilities at Presque Isle State Park and Erie Bluffs State Park. Work involves preparing and delivering informational presentations to park visitors and groups on subjects related to park facilities, features, programs, and operations; patrolling park grounds, boundaries, and facilities for safety and compliance; and directing traffic along roads, trails, and in parking areas. Work includes administering first-aid, artificial respiration, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event of an emergency; participating in fire suppression activities; and assisting with search and rescue operations. Work also includes inspecting buildings and park structures for safety hazards and to ensure compliance with lease or permit conditions; and drafting permit agreements. Work may also include operating motorboats, utility terrain vehicles, and bicycles. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for adherence to established policies, procedures, standards, and objectives.

Meets with park visitors and special interest groups to answer questions and provide
information regarding park facilities, recreational schedules, park history,
environmental features, rules, regulations, policies, and directives.

Prepares and delivers presentations to school groups, civic groups, sportsman’s
associations, and other special interest groups on park history and activities.

Assists Park Managers and DCNR Rangers in containing and controlling emergency
situations.

Notifies Park Managers or DCNR Rangers of issues requiring the involvement of law
enforcement.

Administers first-aid, artificial respiration, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
to injured park visitors.

Assists with search and rescue operations to locate lost and missing visitors on state
park land.

Patrols state park grounds, boundaries, and facilities, including beaches, and high-use day and overnight areas, to verify safe operation and visitor compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.

Inspects buildings and park structures for safety hazards, takes action to mitigate or
correct hazards, and reports issues to a supervisor or Park Manager.

Directs motorists along roads, trails, and in parking areas.

Issues camping, boating, and other park service permits.

Uses the reservation system and other customer service-related software to make reservations, issue permits, and collect fees.

Prepares courtesy warnings, letters, memorandums, and correspondence; and prepares reports regarding daily park activities, visitor safety, incidents, maintenance, facilities, and equipment.

Assists with park maintenance work including litter pickup, sign painting, and trail
marking.

Operates motor vehicles, utility terrain vehicles, bicycles, and motorboats.

Performs related work as required.

Essential Functions

 1. Monitor park on foot, bicycle, boat and vehicle and be able to traverse rough and uneven terrain.

 3. Be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.

 6. Learn and explain state park rules/regulations to visitors.
 7. Operate park 2-way radios.
 8. Ability to learn and use state park reservation system.
 9. Answer questions regarding park facilities, recreation, history, and environmental features.
 10. Competent in use of computer programs and applications.
