Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. The Aide Trainee classification is training level. The Aide Trainee takes instruction from the supervisor and the Registered Nurse on the unit. The Aide Trainee will complete classroom and on the job training through practice, observation and competencies to provide direct patient care duties in support of patients’ daily living activities and programs. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. The Aide Trainee is responsible for learning Nursing Patient Care under the observation and direction of the unit Registered Nurse (RN). •Uses age-specific, patient-centered approaches in patient interactions. •Reports patient’s response to interventions. •Assists/supervises/instructs patients in all activities of daily living (ADLs) e.g. dressing, bathing, shampooing/combing hair, trimming nails, oral hygiene, eating, etc. •Performs/assists patients with ADLs. •Reports changes in patients’ conditions to the Registered Nurse •Turns or positions patients, assists with ambulation or mobility. •Escorts patients on and off grounds for activities and medical appointments. •Monitors and supervises patients during program and leisure activities. •Takes and records temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressures, weighs patients. •Uses standard precaution techniques, such as handwashing, per policy. •Assists with patient identification as needed. •Assists patients with maintenance of living space. •Specifically, providing immediate clean-up to the area after an episode of patient incontinence. •Performs housekeeping duties in the patient care areas. •Maintains a clean environment in both patient rooms and common areas of the assigned unit, this includes but is not limited to cleaning of or assistance with incontinence episodes, spilled liquids/food, etc. •Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds. Special Treatment Procedures include but are not limited to: •Provides nursing care for those patients that may require special levels of observation, therapeutic use of physical restraint while adhering to hospital policy and prescribers’ orders under the direction/supervision of the Registered Nurse. •Responds to psychiatric emergencies, provides the patient(s) with individual instruction, assistance, support as needed. •Observes and reports changes in patient behaviors. •Utilizes therapeutic verbal techniques to address patient concerns and de-escalation. •Utilizes approved physical intervention techniques/holds as directed/ordered. •Provides and documents meals, fluids, toileting. Emergencies/Medical interventions/Use of Medical Equipment: •Responds to medical emergencies, announces a medical emergency, takes appropriate actions for which specifically trained. These could include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid. •Responds to disaster/emergencies, e.g., fires, weather related, flood, hazardous materials incidents. •Follows basic emergency procedures per policy/procedure. •Uses appropriate equipment properly and safely; reports malfunctioning and/or inaudible alarm systems/equipment. Competency Maintenance Activities: •Attends and participates in ongoing Clarks Summit State Hospital (CSSH) mandatory, hospital and departmental training programs e.g., Crisis Prevention training, CPR, Fire/Safety, Infection Control, Patient Rights, Patient Abuse, Drug-Free Workplace, Right to Know, etc. •Attends in-services/training programs/and completes self-learning packages as required •Identifies personal training needs. Oral and Written Communications: •Interacts with others in a polite and respectful manner. •Writes/prints legibly •Basic computer skill, Microsoft products. •Documents in the patient record and on departmental forms. Uses only approved abbreviations. •Provides accurate and legible written work/incident related statements (as required) •Completes patient accountability checks •Maintains confidentiality of patient information •Reports problems accurately using the chain of command •Reports/documents patient incidents and employee work related accidents to the Registered Nurse/Supervisor •Keeps conversations free from discriminatory, abusive, or sexually harassing comments •Attends and participates in staff, committee, and Treatment Team meetings as assigned •Completes records/reports as assigned. •Is accepting and receptive to direction from Registered Nurse, supervisor and/or managers. •Maintains positive and constructive relationships with others. •Needs and sensitivities of others are recognized. Assignment Completion: •Checks Daily Assignment Sheet for work to be completed •Seeks clarification from the Registered Nurse •Organizes work to be done; sets priorities •Orders and maintains nursing supplies, equipment, and forms •Remains alert always. •Reports difficulties to the Registered Nurse •Participates in the nursing team effort by assisting coworkers. •Reports to work as scheduled and follows CSSH report off duty procedures. Patients’ Rights: •Acts as a patient advocate. •Recognizes and protects the rights of patients. •Identifies, describes, and reports patient abuse allegations. •Commits NO acts of patient abuse. •Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital information. •Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment for patients.
