Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is professional work in the development and presentation of environmental education and interpretive programs and activities at a Cowans Gap State Park Complex.

An employee in this class develops, coordinates, and presents environmental education and interpretive programs and activities at a state park or environmental education center. Work requires establishing and maintaining close working relationships with local and state conservation groups, civic organizations, schools, and the public
regarding environmental education and interpretive programs.

Work is assigned in the form of programs and activities and the employee exercises professional judgment in the completion of the assignments. An employee in this class reports to the Park Manager at a state park. The work of employees who report to a Park Manager is reviewed by the Environmental Education Regional Program Coordinator for completeness, quality, technical accuracy, and proficiency.

Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is reviewed upon completion for adherence to standards, completeness and quality by a technical, professional, or administrative supervisor

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014, this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Plans, develops, coordinates, and presents environmental and historical education and interpretive programs and activities at Cowans Gap State Park Complex.

Submits proposals for Environmental Education, Get Outdoors PA, and other related fund monies available. Coordinates purchase with Park Manager and Regional Office.

Coordinates and facilitates Get Outdoors PA, special events, and volunteer programming.

Attends monthly Friends of Cowans Gap State Park volunteer meetings and assists with coordination of Friends programs and events as pertains to use of Park educational facilities, volunteers, and educational programming aspects.

Facilitates environmental learning activities using established lesson plans, including but not limited to state park activities, Project Learning Tree, outdoor biological instructional strategies, US Forest process approach, state parks problems solving approach and class project.

Using state developed themes and programs, conducts special activities for the park visitors, presents a series of environmental and interpretive programs focusing on natural history, historic and cultural events, and environmental management issues. Audiences include the general public, school students, youth groups, scout groups, special populations (senior citizens, people with disabilities), civic organizations and others.

Conducts programs for school groups (K-12), Junior Naturalist Program, and Conservation Volunteer Programs.

Schedules programs and prepares lesson plans using the state park approved format and submits required reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Facilitates guided walks or other guided recreational activities (such as kayaking) and presents audio/visual presentations on topics such as plants, wildlife, nature, history, and/or other concepts. This includes writing scripts for all presentations.

Provides environmental education assistance to other agencies, civic and public organizations, and schools.

Assists schools in implementing environmental education programs and teacher in-service workshops.

Staffs, cleans, organizes, and maintains the nature center with regular and posted hours.

Observes and records habits of wildlife and their characteristics for public information.

Collects and maintains specimens for exhibits in nature center.

Maintains butterfly garden, utilizing conservation volunteers.

Uses specialized equipment including personal computer and software, video, overhead and slide projectors, DVD/VCR, microphones and audio system, telescopes, copy machine, fax machine, cameras, and park radios.

Maintains and coordinates use of environmental learning field equipment, oversees use of equipment, maintains and repairs equipment and makes recommendations for repair, servicing, replacement, and purchase of new equipment to the Park Manager.

Establishes and maintains close liaison with local and state conservation groups, civic organizations, schools, and the public concerning environmental education.

Maintains current and past files and reports, including but not limited to lesson plans, Youth Environmental Learning Series, and attendance records and reports.

Prepares letters, program brochures, schedules, news releases, reports and other correspondence as required.

Maintains with Park Manager approval brochures, displays, exhibits, posters, collections, and other written material for public viewing.

Provides information and assistance to park visitors including answering questions regarding park facilities, resources, recreation, history, and environmental features.

Assist in the coordination of the Volunteer Program for the park. Facilitates monthly workdays with the assistance of the Park Manager.

Works directly with the Friends Group acting as a liaison on behalf of the park.

Maintains and updates social media sites established by park.

Provides assistance to park patrons and explains park rules and regulations. Refers complaints and issues to DCNR Rangers or Park Manager.

Schedules all programs and keeps calendars, brochures, postings, and park staff updated with schedule and any changes.

Assists in the staffing of park offices and visitor centers.

Assists other park personnel as needed in performing their duties.

Performs light maintenance duties as needed.

Maintains CPR and First Aid Certification.

Performs additional and related work as required.
