Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Participates in a 12-month training program designed to develop basic engineering skills through a "hands-on training" approach in an on-the-job environment. This is training work used to develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering and/or soils engineering environment. Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering training received in school. As part of the training, but not limited to, are some of the following duties: assists in performing surveys for highways and bridges in a transportation engineering environment; assists in performing bridge design duties, bridge safety inspections, preparation of bridge plans and preparation of highway plans, geotechnical reports, etc.; assists in the preparation of highway and bridge construction projects; assists in the District and/or county maintenance organizations with assigned maintenance and traffic engineering duties; assists in performing other related duties as required for the training phase. Receives rotational assignment working with professional engineers in problem-solving situations during the training rotations. Attends required CET/ET meetings and trainings. Participates in the preparation of plans for roads, bridges, or other engineering structures by plotting alignments, profiles, topography, depicting terrain and its effect on structural support of performing miscellaneous computations for design geometrics or pre-construction estimates of project material quantities. Participates in the preparation of plans for piles, footings, foundations, and other steel and concrete members necessary to support the structural design. Inspects construction materials and workmanship on routine phases of construction projects to assure adherence to specifications and standards. Must also at times work in heavy traffic conditions being alert for all types of emergencies involving motor vehicles. Assists in traffic control studies pertaining to speed restrictions, passing areas, accident investigations, signalization, signing or similar studies. Assists in summer and winter county maintenance activities during training. Assists in a variety of field data collection and analysis duties for traffic planning purposes; participates in conducting traffic counts, origin and destination surveys, and other field studies to obtain a knowledge of the theory and of expanding and projecting traffic data. Performs other related work as required. Safety (all employees): 1.Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. 5. Evaluate contractor operations: -Immediately stop unsafe actions -Engage in ongoing safety dialogue with the contractor’s leadership 6. Promote a CULTURE that emphasizes SAFETY as a core value: -Immediately stop any unsafe actions. -Incorporate safety into all discussions, deliberations, and decisions. -Continuously communicate the safety direction. -Inspire employees to be a MODEL for safety. -Encourage and support safety initiatives and programs by participating and involving staff. -Recognize safety daily. -Acknowledge EXTRAORDINARY achievements. -Learn and improve through After Action Reviews (AAR’s) -Enforce accountability. Succession Planning: (Employees) Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) (Employees): Understand your responsibilities under the FLSA to ensure that employees are paid appropriately for hours they work or are allowed to work – i.e. all time spent furthering the business of the Department. Ensure that your employees are performing work only within their regularly-assigned shift hours, unless overtime has been directed and approved in advance of completed work. There should be no confusion as to when work has officially started or ended. Ensure that all hours employees work are fully accounted for on payroll sheets. |
