Serve as principal investigator for small game mammal studies, and as the agency’s technical advisor on small game mammals in Pennsylvania. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Research: • Identify research needs and develop appropriate research proposals. • Review research requests and permit applications submitted to the Game Commission. • Assist with coordination and implementation of research projects, including training, purchasing of equipment, and working with outside collaborators, to meet study objectives. • Develop and coordinate implementation of work with field personnel (e.g. biologists, wildlife technicians, biological aides, Wildlife Conservation Officers, Game Lands Officers, Regional Wildlife Management Supervisors). • Analyze research data and report findings in various reports including, but not limited to, final, annual, and quarterly reports accurately and within established deadlines. • Capture, mark, and monitor small game mammals to meet research objectives. • Collects prepare, and deliver samples to laboratories for testing within established timelines. • Maintain drugs and capture equipment according to established timelines. Management: • Develop, update, and implement small game mammals management plan(s) accurately and within established timelines. • Prepare methods to implement and monitor management plan objectives and strategies and evaluate their success accurately and within established timelines. • Participate in and make recommendations for small game mammals related activities including but not limited to hunting season and bag limits, public communications, and habitat management. • Coordinate, develop, and evaluate data collection procedures, resources, training, analyses, and conclusions and report on results accurately and within established timelines. • Implement changes to improve efficiency and reliability of data. • Apply accepted statistical techniques, mapping software, and other computer software programs to analyze small game mammals population and harvest trends, survival rates, habitat use, etc., and interpret results accurately and within established timelines. • Serve as project leader in small game mammals management and research of population dynamics, ecology, and habitat interactions. Outreach and Technical Assistance: • Prepare, present, and effectively and accurately communicate program activities and research findings to staff, public and private organizations, and at professional conferences, symposia, workshops, etc. • Participate in public outreach, respond to public inquiries via email, phone, etc., write and review popular-press articles, Game News articles, peer-reviewed articles for publication, etc. accurately and within established timelines. • Maintain a working knowledge of small game mammals ecology, current management practices and emerging research. • Review and update informational materials and resources for the public such as the website and brochures, accurately and within established timelines. • Serve as the PGC’s primary source for technical information regarding small game mammals, including participation as an expert witness in legal hearings. Administration: • Submit administrative reports (time, travel, vehicle, purchasing, etc.) within established timelines and in accurate manner. • Prepare and submit regular reports on small game mammals management and research activities and projects to supervisor accurately and within established timelines. • Develop strategic goals and objectives for the small game mammals program and prepare annual reports accurately and within established timelines. • Assist with development of an annual budget by identifying and prioritizing needs within the small game mammal program, purchase supplies following procurement policies and procedures, and track expenditures, accurately and within established timelines. • Complete automotive activity reports, timesheets, and keep weekly schedules updated as required, accurately and within established timelines. • Annually participates in harvest data collection activities such as elk and bear check stations and deer aging at deer processors. • Performs other activities as assigned. |
