Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This position is assigned to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Eastern Division, Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums, and is responsible for groundskeeping and building maintenance; assisting with repair services on electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC systems and site vehicles; assisting with preservation work on historic railroad equipment; and aiding in site custodial functions. Work involves the use of a variety of groundskeeping and maintenance materials, equipment, and tools, which frequently requires the application of skills acquired on the job. Minor repairs and routine groundskeeping are performed with considerable independence and reviewed upon completion. More advanced construction or repair work is performed under the direction of the Maintenance Repairman 2 or Supervisor. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. The Maintenance Repairman 1 (MR1) performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, buildings, and grounds. MR1 assists with regular inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on buildings, water treatment and delivery, heating and cooling, sewage systems, fire pumps, generators, and other equipment. MR1 clears blocked drains and performs minor repairs to toilets, faucets, and drinking fountains. MR1 performs minor carpentry tasks including but not limited to assembling and repairing prefabricated picnic tables, signs, furniture, shelving, partitions, and storage bins. MR1 paints or stains building walls, ceilings, signs, and gates by scraping and removing old finish and rolling or using brushes to apply paint or stain. MR1 makes minor electrical repairs including but not limited to replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, replacing switches, and adjusting electrical motors. MR1 performs minor roofing tasks by repairing shingles, soffits, flashing, and spouting. MR1 builds simple forms for cement work using carpentry tools, mixes and places cement, finishes cement using mason tools, and lays stone and block walls. MR1 operates and maintains power and hand tools associated with carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and other building trades in the performance of maintenance work. MR1 operates motorized equipment, including pickup trucks, forklifts, scissor lifts, utility vehicle, snow-removal equipment, mowers, back hoe, cranes, and other heavy equipment. MR1 assists in the removal of snow from all Museum sidewalks and parking lots using basic hand and heavy motorized snow removal equipment; helps to install, remove, and maintain plows on pickup trucks and utility vehicles; helps to maintain other snow-removal equipment. MR1 performs landscaping duties on museum property by seeding and mowing grass, trimming and removing weeds, and planting, pruning, and removing shrubs, branches, and trees; maintains all landscaping, trimming, pruning, and mowing equipment. MR1 assists restoration personnel to perform preservation work on the Museum’s collection of historic locomotives, railcars and related equipment; to build and maintain kit-based sheds, canopies and shelters for materials, vehicles, and artifacts. MR1 helps to maintain museum vehicles and equipment by changing the oil, checking fluid levels, changing filters, and checking tire pressures. MR1 drives vehicles to transport personnel, tools, equipment, supplies, and materials. MR1 oversees routine manual tasks performed by community-service workers and volunteers, and works with outside contractors performing building maintenance, construction, and restoration work. MR1 aids in custodial functions, on an as needed basis, including cleaning floors, stripping and waxing floors, cleaning and supplying restroom facilities, and emptying trash and recycling receptacles; assists with the upkeep and inventory of related tools, equipment, and materials. MR1 assists with set-up and tear-down for museum events and facility rentals. MR1 is responsible to be familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; immediately report all workplace injuries or incidents to his supervisor; and to immediately correct any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor.
