Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This position is responsible for performing routine maintenance work including semi-skilled or mechanical assignments within Wernersville State Hospital. The position is specifically assigned to the Garage Department but may work with other departments as needed including construction and trades and the Utility Plant. The position reports to the Groundskeeper Supervisor. The responsibilities of this position are seasonally determined, thus the priorities concerning the type of work vary. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Ground Work includes maintenance of lawn and other hospital property; utilizing hand and riding lawn mowers, rakes, wheelbarrows; trimming and pruning shrubbery; raking leaves and debris; planting shrubs/flowers/trees; cleaning walkways and streets. Mows and trims grass with hand and gas-powered equipment, trims hedges, shrubs, trees, and cleans grounds around buildings and groves by removing leaves, branches, trees and stumps. May use chain saws as needed. Perform snow removal using snow removal equipment and disposes of snow appropriately. Cleans pipe tunnels, storm drains, window wells, ditches as directed. Assists with boiler efficiency by pulling ashes, checking fires, blowing soot from tubes and maintaining proper fuel beds and keeping coal stoker hopper full. Serve as helper to skilled trades workers providing assistance with building simple forms for cement work using carpentry tools; mixing and placing cement; finish cement using masonry tools; laying stone and block walls; erecting scaffolding; loading and unloading materials and supplies; painting interior and exterior windows, doors, etc., interior walls, ceilings, floors, stairwells; repairing buildings and building facilities including the boiler plant; using tools of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other building trades in performance of maintenance work; perform minor tool and equipment maintenance. SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE: 1. Perform grass mowing, trimming, and leaf mulching Pruning of trees and shrubs and snow removal using a variety of equipment designed for this type of work to provide a safe, sanitary and attractive environment. 2. Performs lawn, tree and shrub maintenance in order to have healthy and disease- free plants. 3. Removes dead and diseased trees and shrubs, using ladders, chain saws and other equipment designed to do this type of work. 4. Performs equipment repairs and preventive maintenance on all equipment assigned to the Groundskeeping Department… this may involve assisting the mechanic to make minor repairs. 5. Performs various assignments as necessary to provide support to the Garage and Maintenance Departments. 6. Uses a variety of powered and non-powered tools and equipment to perform Groundskeeping and Maintenance requirements. 7. Performs heavy manual work to lift, carry and maneuver equipment, tools and material, at times must work in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold and at times dusty. 8. Prepares administration documents such as time and attendance and Maintenance Work Orders 9. Perform grounds, construction and maintenance repair work as directed. 10. Work additional shifts/additional days beyond normal schedule/additional hours before or beyond end of shift as mandated. This position performs manual labor using a wide variety of powered and non-powered equipment and tools involving Groundskeeping and Maintenance activities. Essential Functions: 1. Operates motorized Groundskeeping equipment and powered tools, i.e., powered mowers, tractors, chain saws, trimmers, leaf blowers and sweepers. 2. Reads and comprehends written and oral instructions from supervisor. 3. Uses ladders and high lift equipment at various heights to perform tree pruning and maintenance. 4. Uses and repairs hand tools, i.e., shovels, rakes, brooms, hoes, and tools associated with the Maintenance Trades etc. 5. Performs minor equipment repairs to powered and non-powered equipment and tools. 6. Interprets Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). 7. Prepares and administers administrative documents, i.e., Maintenance Work Orders and time and attendance sheets. 8. Communicates clearly and concisely with supervisors and staff verbally; uses communication devices such as telephone and two-way radio. 9. Performs heavy manual work to maneuver, lift and carry heavy equipment, material and tools. 10. Performs maintenance and repair requirements at extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) and at times dusty. 11. Wears an appropriate respirator and protective clothing for personal protection from confined space hazards and other environmental conditions, such as asbestos-containing material (ACM) or lead-containing material) LCM), while performing maintenance duties. 12. Access a computer to retrieve email, pay statements, submit leave requests and overtime and maintain data in ESS. 13. This position requires emergency call-in and overtime. Employee responds and participates by providing assistance in all aspects of emergency snow/ice removal efforts, in order to maintain a safe environment of care for the patients and staff. A few examples include shoveling, de-icing, operating mechanical snow removal equipment, sweeping etc., or whatever assistance is deemed appropriate by the Facility Maintenance Manager. Obtain and maintain CPR Certification and utilize skills as necessary. |
