Position Purpose:

The Lake Erie Unit (LEU) Fisheries Biologist 1 will be responsible for assisting the vessel captain, to plot, navigate, operate, maintain and conduct all associated activities relevant to research operations on Lake Erie and connecting waterways; serve as a Pennsylvania representative on Lake Erie Committee Task Groups as assigned by the LEU Leader and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as per interagency assessment program protocol; conduct fish dissections to obtain biological and life history information and pathology on Lake Erie fish stocks and assist in the investigation of fish kills.

Overall Function of the Position:

The Fisheries Biologist 1 will assist the LEU Leader in coordinating the field assessment programs and efficient operation of the LEU.

The Fisheries Biologist will ensure the open lake assessment programs are aligned with the standard operating procedures of the Lake Erie Committee technical task groups (Yellow Perch Task Group, Walleye Task Group, Coldwater Task Group and Forage Task Group), and assist in the experimental design and execution of aquatic research related to the internal, field specific objectives the LEU.

Serve as a Pennsylvania representative on Lake Erie Committee Task Groups as assigned by the Unit Leader and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as per interagency assessment program protocol.

Responsible for ensuring that LEU vessels meet all federal and state qualifications, regulations, and specifications for the safe and prudent navigation and operation on Great Lakes waters.

Responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of ground gear (gill nets, otter trawls) and mechanized deck equipment used in open lake assessment of fish stocks.

Responsible for the utilization and maintenance of limnological assessment equipment including plankton nets, benthic samplers and chemical profile instrumentation.

Responsible maintenance of vessel / log position, time and duration of sampling sites and stations using navigational software. Maintain and oversee care of vessel, moorings, and mooring spaces. Prepare for overwinter storage of the research vessel and other boats. Prepare necessary work orders needed for engine, hull and deck equipment. Maintain all radio, navigational, radar, and functional use of all forms of gear including; ground gear (otter trawls); nets (gill nets and trap nets); biological and limnological sampling gear (Hydrolab, Ponar, zooplankton nets, etc). Construct and/or repair or make ready all other associated vessel equipment pertinent to Lake Erie Research project activities.

Additionally, the Fisheries Biologist 1 will enter data into PFBC and Lake Erie Unit databases, as needed. Process, identify and enumerate samples attained through trawling and gillnet assessment. Conduct fish dissections and sample preparation as needed. Assist with fish aging using scales, otolith and fin rays. Assist with the collection, preparation, preservation and processing of limnological and water quality samples. Assist with seasonal creel surveys, as needed. Assist with the assembly of annual reports to the Lake Erie Committee, including summaries of data into tabular and chart formats for publication. Participate in inter-jurisdictional fisheries assessment as directed by the LEU Leader.

Participate in educational and public outreach programs as related to the LEU programs. Attend Agency, Bureau, Division or other meetings as directed by LEU Leader. Direct the service and repair of the LEU vehicles, including annual inspections, scheduled maintenance and safe operation. Coordinate safety program for the LEU, oversee all safety issues related to LEU facilities, vessels, and vehicles.

Represent the PFBC on the Lake Erie Grass Carp Advisory Group and the Great Lakes Grass Carp Strike Force.

Act as the liaison for the Commission to the Great Lakes stocking database and ensure its accuracy.

Act as alternate for Area 9 Leader on the Regional Science Consortium BOD.

Assist with routine maintenance, janitorial, and housekeeping responsibilities of LEU facilities, vehicles, and vessels.

Procure equipment and supplies associated with this position as per Commonwealth purchasing policy.

Performs related work as required.

Available for in-state, out-of-state and out-of-country travel.

Essential Functions

 1. Assist the Unit Leader with coordination of the Lake Erie field assessment program.
 2. Operate and maintain a safe and viable fisheries research fleet for LEU on Lake Erie
 3. Proficient in the construction, deployment, and repair of large vessel sampling gear including gill nets and trawls and mechanized deck gear.
 4. Proficient in mechanical ability, esp. applic. to marine engines& electronics, hydraulics, winches, & other deck gear aboard fisheries research vessel
 5. Conduct routine fish biopsies for the determination of age, sex, diet, and growth of specimen.
 6. Assist with limnological sample collections, preparations, and preservation.
 7. Coordinate scheduled maintenance, inspection, and safe operation of LEU vehicle inventory.
 8. Lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
