Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This is a six-month trainee position where the incumbent acquires the appropriate licensure for the Transportation Equipment Operator A classification, becomes certified on a minimum number of pieces of equipment for the assigned work site, and becomes acclimated to the department’s work rules, safety policies, and local reporting procedures. |
Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. This is a trainee position that is responsible for operating highway construction and maintenance equipment and performing a variety of manual laboring duties on a highway or bridge maintenance crew. Trains for licensing and certification to operate heavy construction equipment which includes at least the following: Heavy Truck/Tandem Axle (HT/TA) and loader (LD) (bucket capacity of 4.5 cubic yards or less) on highway or bridge maintenance crews; learns to perform and document required pre-and post-operation checks and make necessary field adjustments to permit safe operation and minimize wear. Operates a variety of hand and foot controls, utilizes seat belts and installs and removes tire chains on dual wheels. Trains to perform a variety of manual laboring duties using both motorized and non-motorized hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, lutes, chain saws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers and trimmers, routers, patching machines and heating kettles; selects and uses tools properly for job to minimize wear and breakage; to properly report missing or broken equipment. Maintains a safe work environment for self, co-workers, and the motoring public by following proper safety procedures and using proper protective equipment. Makes visual observations, manual adjustments, reports findings in both written and oral format. Maintains awareness of work area by helping self and others avoid risks and hazards. Properly reports all personal injuries and equipment accidents immediately to include near-misses and gets proper treatment to minimize risk of further injury. Implements the environmental protection requirements of maintenance work activities performed by the employee. Also fulfills the environmental management requirements designated for this title in environmental training programs. Performs other related duties as required. Safety: 1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. Succession Planning: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Department Green Plan Policy: Commit to following the Department’s Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department’s Green Plan Policy shall be documented in the employee’s performance review. Fair Labor Standards Act: Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0-hour day. |
