Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is technical public safety and law enforcement work in forestry operations and outdoor recreation. Serves as a public service, safety, and law enforcement officer for Forest District 12 to ensure the safety of visitors, the preservation of the forestry environment and facilities. Provides a point of contact for individuals and groups visiting the state forest.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Work involves patrolling the state forest and boundaries to provide public contact, ensure visitor safety, compliance with State Forest Rules and Regulations, the Commonwealth’s Crimes Code, Vehicle Code, Game Law and Fish and Boat Laws.

PATROLS – Operates a motor vehicle, ATV, snowmobile, or boat to patrol the forest district, as well as patrolling by bicycle or by foot. Ensures visitor safety and protection of the resource. Aids visitors requiring help. Inspects buildings, structures and facilities for security and safety. Ensures that posters, bulletin boards and signs are current and serviceable. Ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and neat condition.

PUBLIC RELATIONS – Presents a professional DCNR Ranger image to the public through uniform appearance, verbal skills, courtesies, and knowledge of the forest, the environment and history, rules, regulations and laws, telephone skills and a presence of self-confidence. Provides information and assistance to visitors.

LAW ENFORCEMENT – Enforces the provisions of the law, makes physical arrests and issues citations, criminal complaints and warrants consistent with State, Departmental and Bureau Directives, guidelines, and regulations. Investigates complaints, accidents, and crimes. Determines action to take, prepares incident reports and cooperates with the Local and State Police, Fish and Boat and Game Commissions. Prosecutes cases, presents evidence, and witnesses and examines and cross examines witnesses and testifies on behalf of the Commonwealth before the courts. Completes property records for evidence and lost and found articles to be turned over to the district’s evidence custodian as well as other reports. Maintains assigned equipment.

EMERGENCIES – Takes charge of situations in emergencies, search and rescue operations and accidents to ensure the safety and protection of the visitor and the resource. Directs traffic. Possession of a valid certificate or its equivalent in First-Aid, Adult, Child, and Infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as approved by the PA Department of Health for professional rescuers or healthcare professionals. Provides First-Aid and CPR consistent with current certifications.

REPORTS AND INSPECTIONS – Completes monthly, daily logs and reports including the status and condition of camping areas, facilities, equipment, visitor safety, occurring incidents, citations, arrests, and accidents.

Patrols the forest district, facilities and responds appropriately to any situation which may arise. This includes safety issues, visitors that require assistance, emergencies and violations of Commonwealth Laws or Forestry Rules and Regulations. Determines course of action to take to resolve issues and follows through. Calls for backup assistance as necessary.
