Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position provides semi-skilled labor for work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of State Forest roads, facilities and equipment in the areas of Rothrock State Forest as assigned by the Assistant Forest Manager and under the supervision of the Forest Maintenance Supervisor. Assists with wildland fire suppression, fire prevention and pre-suppression programs and activities. Could participate as a member of Pennsylvania's Specialized Wildland Fire Crew involved in Federal out of state emergency incidents.

Description of Duties:

Maintenance of State Forest Facilities:
1. Paint buildings
2. Repair buildings and equipment
3. Repair indoor plumbing in facilities
4. Assist with repairs to automotive and other equipment
5. Stain, paint and replace signs
6. Assist in keeping the workshop and storage buildings clean and orderly
7. Clean road culverts and ditches
8. Maintain driving surface of state forest roads (unimproved dirt, improved dirt and blacktop roads)
9. Install new culverts and build headwalls
10. Remove dead and fallen trees from roadside
11. Operate chainsaw as needed
12. Mow around signs
13. Brush roadsides
14. Litter clean-up
15. Post signs
16. Paint State Forest boundaries
17. Operate drill press, bench grinder, skil saw, table saw, radial arm saw
18. Maintain forest recreational trails by periodically repainting blazes, removing windfalls and deadfalls with a chainsaw, constructing and maintaining water diversion controls, and erecting and maintaining signs
19. Assist equipment operation B's mowing roadside shoulders, ditches and banks. Laborer will occasionally operate a farm tractor with a brush hog, sickle bar or side boom mower
20. Occasionally operate a skid steer during road, trail and building maintenance and construction projects
21. Assist with maintenance of district deer fences
22. Assist with lawn maintenance at District Office

Picnic Area Maintenance:
1. Mow lawns
2. Collect trash and garbage
3. Clean toilets
4. Litter clean-up
5. Sign posting
6. Assist in pumping tanks
7. Repair and maintain picnic pavilions, rest room facilities, picnic tables, fire rings and barbecue grills

Fire Protection:
1 Suppression activities as required to include hauling firefighters, supplies and equipment; work on fire line and mop up
2. Assist in fire prevention and pre-suppression programs and activities
3. Operate, repair and maintain fire fighting equipment
4. Assist as directed in prescribed fire activities

Work assignments are provided daily by the Forest Maintenance Supervisor. Work standards, and work group goals and objectives are provided annually by the Forest Maintenance Supervisor and the Forest Assistant Manager. Work is reviewed on a continuing basis. Employee occasionally functions as a work leader.

Essential Functions

 1. Understands and implements daily work assignments provided by Forest Maintenance Supervisor
 2. Clearly communicates via phone and radio
 3. Ability to work in all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, ice, cold)
 4. Physical capability to traverse steep, rocky terrain for long distances
 5. Ability to lift up to 80 pounds
 6. Ability to operate farm tractors, mowers, skid steer, hand tools, power and air tools
 7. Ability to operate, maintain, and repair power saws, pole pruners, brush saws, and weed eaters
 8. Have a basic knowledge of wildland fire suppression measures and of basic wildland fire behavior
 9. Operates vehicles in a safe manner and at posted speeds or at safe speeds dependent upon road conditions
 10. Ability to safely operate vehicles in mud, ice and snow
