Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This employee, assigned to the Maintenance Department Plumbing Shop under the supervision of the Plumber Foreman, is responsible for performing skilled tasks on a journeyman level in accordance with established Plumbing Trade practices. Technical work involves installation, renovation, preventive maintenance, repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, heating equipment, drainage systems, related equipment and piping for these systems at a State Mental Hospital. Supervision is provided by the Plumber Foreman through Maintenance Work Orders or special oral or written instructions, which may or may not be accompanied by blueprints or sketches. A certain latitude is allowed for independent judgment in determining materials and work methods to be used.

Description of Duties:

Install, maintain, and repair valves, faucets, traps, sinks, wash bowls, fixture supports, pipe hangers, and any other plumbing fixtures and equipment normally associated with the Plumbing Trade by use of knowledge and tools of the trade in order to maintain a safe and sanitary environment. Maintain piping systems, both above and below ground level, which include water, gas, waste, sanitary, storm, air, hot water heat, hi-pressure steam, lo-pressure steam, condensate return lines, pneumatic control systems, and vent lines by visual checks and pressure testing, when necessary, in order to locate defective piping, fittings, and equipment. Repair defective piping systems by use of hand and power tools applicable to the Plumbing Trade, performing accurate pipe measurements on the job site or in the shop, using knowledge and skills of the Plumbing Trade in order to facilitate safe and effective repairs and provide a sanitary environment for patients and employees. Cut, ream, thread, and bend pipes of various sizes and materials by use of hand and powered pipe-working equipment and tools in order to maintain piping systems that are leak-proof, safe and sanitary. Clean and make minor repairs to all equipment and tools. Rig, erect, and work from all types of metal scaffolding and ladders by use of knowledge of safety standards, requirements for anchoring, etc., in order to handle and perform the hazardous duties involved in maintaining buildings and structures. Perform heavy manual work to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions. Perform preventive maintenance according to predetermined time schedules on plumbing fixtures, piping, sump pumps, sewage pumps, water pumps, hot water generating tanks and related circulating pumps, condensate return pumps, air compressors, commercial laundry equipment, dietary equipment, housekeeping equipment, and all related and necessary equipment needed in order to provide a safe, sanitary and trouble-free environment. Perform various projects and assignments, as necessary or when directed, in order to provide support to the Maintenance Department in a professional, workmanlike manner. Attend yearly required training and adhere to DHS, WeSH policies and procedures, Environment of Care Patient Safety, departmental and hospital safety requirements. I am given oral and written work orders by the Plumber Foreman who supervises my work and reviews it after completion.

This employee performs maintenance and repair, preventive maintenance and installation of a wide variety of plumbing, heating, ventilating, water supply and waste utility distribution systems for the Maintenance Department at Wernersville State Hospital.
1.Installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing distribution systems above and below ground level.
2.Installs, repairs, and maintains heating and ventilating system components and controls.
3.Repairs and maintains steam distribution and system components and controls.
4.Installs, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on plumbing fixtures, piping, sump
pumps, sewage pumps, water pumps, hot water generating tanks and related circulating
pumps, condensate return pumps, air compressors, commercial Laundry, Dietary, and
Housekeeping equipment.
5.Performs soldering and brazing of distribution piping.
6.Uses powered and non-powered tools.
7.Performs maintenance and repair requirements in confined areas at extreme temperatures
(both hot and cold).
8.Performs maintenance and repair requirements using ladders and scaffolding at various
heights.
9.Interprets shop drawings and sketches. Reads and comprehends manufacturers’ operating
manual instructions and procedures, DHS, hospital, and departmental regulations and
procedures.
10.Communicates clearly and concisely with supervisors and staff verbally; uses communication devices, i.e., telephone and two-way radio.
11.Prepares and administers documents, i.e., Maintenance Work Orders and time and attendance.
12.Performs heavy manual work to maneuver, lift, and carry heavy piping equipment, materials, and tools.
13.Interprets Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
14.Wears an appropriate respirator and protective clothing for personal protection from confined space hazards and other environmental conditions, such as asbestos containing
materials (ACM) or lead-containing materials (LCM) while performing maintenance
duties. This position is also subject to overtime and emergency call-in. This employee responds and participates by providing assistance in all aspects of emergency snow/ice removal efforts, in order to maintain a safe environment of care for the patients and staff. a few examples include shoveling, de-icing, operating mechanical snow removal equipment, sweeping etc. or whatever assistance is deemed appropriate by the facility maintenance manager.
Must maintain CPR certification.
