Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Completes electrical workload as required for the preventative maintenance and repairs the electrical distribution system and electrically operated equipment throughout the institution physical plant. Provides formal instructions and on the job training to inmates assigned to the Electric Shop. Formal classroom type instruction to include the standard practices, methods and procedures for the Electrical Trade as developed by the National Electric Code. Included in these instructions is the repair of high and low voltage electrical lines, equipment and installation of new equipment and fixtures. Issues and inventories daily, or as often as necessary, the materials and tools used during daily work assignments. This procedure is to be adhered to for the purpose of maintaining the institution. Plans and assigns daily inmate work schedules, providing close supervision and inspection upon completion. Completes maintenance and repair records, work order assignments and records time and materials of tradesman and inmate labor necessary for completion of work order assignments. Maintains order and discipline among inmate work details. Conducts daily inmate security searches along with daily security search of the Electric Shop. Performs related duties as required. Work may be assigned to areas other than the Electric Shop in a manner consistent wtih organizational requirements of the institution. Teaches the hazards and safety practices of the electrical trade. ESSENTAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary 3. Instruct and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices of the electrical trade 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the electrical trade 12. Operate basic office equipment 13. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 14. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 15. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 16. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 17. Visually observe inmates’ activities 18. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff 19. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 20. Travel as required |

Work is received in the form of work orders which may be accompanied by drawings, sketches or blueprints. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed by technical or administrative superiors through conferences, reports and by inspection of completed assignments. Supervision is given to employee by periodic visits to the job sites. Instruction, when needed, is given as assignments are made. Shop drawings and sketches are prepared for new projects as necessitated. Most supervision is given verbally and in the form of work orders as Tradesman is assigned to a particular maintenance job. Tradesman is requested to express his own input on new job assignments. |
