Position Purpose:

Position Purpose: Assists in raising the Loyalsock Game Farm`s quota of about 120,000 pheasants to be released for the sportsman of PA.

Description of Duties:

Duties are many and vary daily depending on what aspect of game farm operations this employee is assigned. Operations are brooding and holding a large number (140,000) of pheasants; performing maintenance on equipment used for these operations and also on Commonwealth buildings, grounds, and fleet of vehicles. Skilled trades needed to accomplish these tasks include but are not limited to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, farming, and mechanical.

Participates in the raising, caring and distribution of pheasants which involves: preparing the brooder houses, i.e., cleaning and disinfecting the buildings and equipment, placing shavings on the breeder house floor; ensuring that temperature, ventilation, lighting, feed and water are properly maintained; administering medication as required via feed and water; observing the behavior of the birds during all phases of their development to determine that all environmental factors are properly maintained; sexing and beak-trimming the chicks before moving the birds from brooder fields to holding pens; maintaining feeders and water lines; removing dead birds from the brooder houses and holding pens; catching birds and placing the birds into shipping crates for distribution to designated areas for release.

Performs electrical work on building(s) and facilities: such as installing and/or replacing fuses, wiring, switches, receptacles, lighting fixtures and heating units; using various hand tools.

Performs carpentry/construction work: such as erecting walls, erecting and repairing roofs; framing and hanging doors; installing siding; framing and installing windows; installing spouting; constructing/repairing shipping crates; painting; fabricating and installing metal gates, posts and fences; repairing netting; using planers, circular saws, radial/table saws, squares, hammers, paint bushes, welders, cutting torches, post pounders, shovels, and various hand tools, etc.

Performs plumbing work which involves installing water lines; cutting and threading pipe; sweating copper joints; and replacing packing in valves; using welders, pipe cutters/wrenches, shovels, etc.

Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on automotive/mechanical equipment, i.e. trucks, tractors, backhoes, bulldozers, mowers, chainsaws, plows, etc., which involves changing oil, antifreeze, filters, batteries, and plugs; lubricating equipment; replacing exhaust systems; adjusting/replacing brakes; and welding damaged parts; using welders and various hand tools.

Lead Game Farm Workers during daily operations and maintain daily records.

Performs all other duties assigned.

Essential Functions

 1. Perform electrical wiring, plumbing, cement finishing, roofing, surveying, landscaping, and record keeping.
 2. Use hands and fingers to grasp and operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, hatchery equipment, mechanized/motorized and general farming equip.
 3. Lift heavy objects up to 80 lbs.
 4. Exhibit physical strength and stamina sufficient to perform duties under varying climatic conditions.
