Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Technical work in an agriculture inspection program, to determine compliance with state regulations pertaining to standards of purity, quality, and sanitation.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Assists in numerous types of food safety related inspections in a variety of establishments including; dairy plants, equipment, and farms in handling, processing, bottling, packaging, and distribution operations; or food wholesale, retail, manufacturing, and storage facilities such as shellfish plants, food vending operations, retail food stores, public eating and drinking establishments, school cafeterias, catering facilities, eating facilities at summer camps and campgrounds, maple product operations, produce farms, egg processing facilities and seasonal farm label camps.

Assists in reviewing plans, blueprints, materials for construction, installation and/or modifications of dairy systems such as a dairy farm’s water supply and pipeline milking systems, to ensure they are in compliance with minimum standards.

Assists with the reviewing of blueprints and applications for the licensure of newly opened food establishments to make sure the design is compliant with Commonwealth laws and regulations.

Works within assigned counties/zip codes in specific region of the state.

Samples food and milk products to determine safety and compliance of products to standards and regulations.

Received Dairy Sampling Surveillance Officer certification (DSSO)

Sends samples of milk and food as deemed necessary to the Food Safety Laboratory, Harrisburg.

Inspects fruits and vegetables to determine proper grade in terms of quality and condition.

Reviews documentation to determine if fruits and vegetables are appropriately labeled including the weight and source of the commodity.

Issues federal grading certificates documenting the quality and condition of fruits and vegetables.

Prepares correspondence to facility owners, the public, and department supervisors regarding the grading of fruits and vegetables.

Assists in the investigation of complaints of food and milk products, sanitation conditions and other related problems when notified by consumers or other regulatory agencies.

Enters data gathered during inspections and investigations, into food safety software programs to record results of activities through use of a computer.

Maintains a record keeping system documenting activities and actions related to milk and food sanitation activities.

Prepares written narrative and statistical reports and records/correspondence pertaining to inspections and other activities related to the food or milk industry and sends to supervisor for review and approval.

Assists in preparing and conducting formal presentations related to food safety in the food industry for farming community, schools, civic groups, restaurant workers etc., by accompanying the Food Inspector giving part of the presentation and presenting part of the prepared materials under observation of the journeyman level Inspector.

Assists in milk and food detentions or disposals if warranted.

Assists in milk and food related emergency responses as needed.

Assist in conducting Food Borne Illness investigations.

Assists in preparing for court cases by gathering evidence and making recommendations for citations and prosecutions to supervisor.

Attend meetings and training seminars which may include overnight travel as deemed necessary.

Conduct unannounced food safety inspections of various facility types during hours of operation. This may include the need to work occasional non routine work days and/or outside of normal work hours to include starting before 8:00 AM or working beyond 4:00 PM.

Demonstrate a commitment to meeting and exceeding expectations of the bureau’s customers at all times.

Apply Lean tool(s) to day-to-day tasks when a process has been identified for improvement.

Essential Functions
