Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

An employee in this class performs skilled work at a journeyman level in the Carpenter shop and various Maintenance shops at Warren State Hospital as assigned. This includes maintenance, repair, installation, and new construction aspects as needed. They will work with other employees of Warren state Hospital and at times may work with outside contractors. They work on a wide variety of mechanical equipment, buildings, grounds, and assets while displaying considerable knowledge of tools, materials, work methods, and safety procedures. The individual occupying this position will work in all areas of the Maintenance Department as needed.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Performs carpentry work by constructing or repairing walls, ceilings, cabinets and all wood or construction material in the carpentry trade in order to ensure our carpentry needs are met. Lays flooring to include linoleum, carpet, vinyl tiles, wood and other various materials. Makes repairs to floors and or resurface floors to ensure flooring is safe, neat and therapeutically pleasing.

Performs masonry work such as pouring concrete, building concrete forms, laying brick/block, footer work, retaining walls and other necessary masonry work.

Performs paint surface preparation and painting to ensure proper aesthetics and maintenance of our buildings and grounds.

Repairs or fabricates metal products by operating shears, breaks, lathes, band saws and other related equipment in order to maintain, repair, rebuild or install metal needed for upkeep of buildings, grounds and assets.

Performs roofing work by making repairs and or installing roofing systems of all types, flashing, spouting and downspouts, along with making repairs to and installing roof drains and other general repairs in order to ensure roofing needs are met.

Performs electrical work by repairing or replacing switches, receptacles, and/or general circuits and related equipment; installs wiring; makes terminations and performs other general electric work in order to ensure electrical needs are met.

Performs plumbing work by opening blocked drains, repairing and/or replacing faucets and fixtures, cutting and threading pipe, installing and/or repairing water or heat systems in order to ensure plumbing needs are met.

Performs welding and fabrication work on steam lines, vehicles, equipment and other items needed for continued operations.

Performs HVAC work to include steam hot water and gas fired appliances along with cooling system and refrigeration work.

Moves equipment and furniture by using manual labor, hand trucks, dollies and related equipment in order to ensure that the furniture/equipment is moved in such a manner to ensure that items are not damaged and that safety rules are followed.

Cleans work areas by removing all refuse and materials from the work site in order to leave the work area ready for use.

Performs work in environmentally challenging situations which may include confined space.

Uses appropriate safety equipment when required such as utilizing respirators, gloves etc.

May be trained in lead work, asbestos worker, CFC and or related safety/certification training as may be required. This work is in order to safely comply with various rules, laws and or standards while at the same time meeting the needs of this facility.

Performs other related duties by following instructions of supervisor in order to provide for continuity of services. These other duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to: other trades work, laboring, housekeeping, grounds and some equipment operation within capabilities.

Must complete required paperwork and maintenance work orders/PM's in a timely fashion.

Makes independent decisions of a routine and recurring nature based upon established Hospital policies and guidelines, training, job knowledge and competency.

Communicates with Supervisor and/or Facility Maintenance Managers for input on decisions regarding non-routine, unusual situations/circumstances, and material acquisition.

Essential Functions
: Provide a list of essential functions for this position. Example: Transports boxes weighing up to 60 pounds.
 
 1. Performs journeyman level work in the trades assigned; works independently with minimal supervision.
 2. Interprets and works from sketches and diagrams.
 3. Identifies defects in equipment, building fixtures, etc., and makes appropriate repairs.
 4. Uses and cares for hand tools, shop tools, and equipment needed to accomplish trades work.
 5. Performs heavy manual labor, including erecting ladders and scaffolding, moving tools/equipment/materials to and from the worksite.
 6. Recognizes occupational hazards and follows safety precautions, including use of required personal protective equipment.
 7. Works cooperatively with other Maintenance staff, supervisors, other Departments, and outside personnel.
 8. Receives assignments orally and from work orders; Records time and materials on work order forms.
 9. Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, twist, walk, work in tight spaces, traverse uneven surfaces.
 10. Must be able to climb within and upon buildings, ladders and scaffolding and work in confined spaces.
