Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The purpose of this position is to provide semi-skilled work in maintenance of State Forest facilities on the Sproul State Forest and provide forest fire protection within the Sproul Forest District.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

State Forest Maintenance: Maintain State Forest roads by clearing culvert pipes of sediment and debris, clearing stones from roadway after road grader has cut and shaped roads, clear side ditches of debris and sediment, cut and remove brush and trees from roadsides as directed by the supervisor.

Operate stone rake pulled by tractor or pickup truck.

Maintain State Forest boundary lines and corners by painting blazed trees, witness marks and corner posts. Clear boundary lines of brush where needed.

Maintain State Forest hiking, horse, mountain biking, ATV, and snowmobile trails by painting trail markers, and removing brush and tops from surfaces using chainsaws and other hand tools.

Regeneration: Maintain woven wire deer fences. Maintain tree shelter plantings. Assist with tree planting projects.

Sign Maintenance and Preparation: Operate wood working equipment including saws, sanders, and routers to prepare and maintain routed wooden signs used on State Forest Land.

Collect weight delivery slips and account for stone deliveries on Capital Road projects.

Perform maintenance and improvements on state buildings by painting, roofing, pouring concrete and general cleaning. Mow grass with power mowers and weed eaters.

Assists the Forest Fire Supervisor/Forester with programs and fire suppression activities.

Prepare simple exhibits and visual aids for fire prevention programs.

Maintain hand tools and mechanized equipment used in extinguishing wildfire. Reduce fire hazards in the forest and in areas of high wildfire incidence. Detect wildfires from fire towers as directed by supervisor.

Extinguish and mop-up wildfires using hand tools and power water pumps designed for wildfire suppression. Communicate with other district personnel by two-way radio and inform supervisors of fire suppression progress and problems. Transcribe information of fire suppression activities and contact fire suppression personnel as directed by the fire boss of wildfires.

Safety: Understand the Safety Manual and use all safety equipment for assigned task. Functions as first responder on land searches.
