Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is a technical forestry position involving a variety of duties in the William Penn State Forest District. This position is responsible for Forest District programs such timber sales, fire prevention, insect and disease control, forest tree nursery development, recreation projects, and other duties as assigned. Work involves conducting surveys to accurately measure and record forest resource characteristics, summarizing and reporting field data, and implementing standard forest management practices. Assignments are received from a forestry professional through general instructions. Employee is required to interpret maps, drawings, and plans in the execution of assignments. Work is reviewed upon completion for quality of work and compliance with agency standards.

The primary goal of this position is to aid forestry professionals throughout the district, enhance forest resources on State Forest Land, and facilitate recreation projects.

Description of Duties:

Key Result Area No. 1 - STATE FOREST MANAGEMENT
Assist forestry professionals in managing state forest resources.

Key Activities
1. Assist forestry professional to monitor and maintain the William Penn State Forest boundary lines.
2. Ensure that State Forest identification signs and State Forest Rules and Regulations are posted and maintained.
3. Coordinates tree planting projects following plans developed by a forestry professional.
4. Assist in the implementation of recreation projects such as trail layout and maintenance.
5. Assist in the mitigation of invasive plant species.
6. Assist in treatments for invasive pests (emerald ash borer and beech leaf disease protection)
7. Performs timber stand analysis by compiling data, such as timber type, timber vitality, timber measurements, recreation use, and insect and disease mortality. Present findings and recommendations to a forestry professional for further directions.
8. Lays out timber sales following instructions and directions provided by a forestry professional.
9. Conduct landscape examinations and compiles information for use in decision making by a forestry professional.
10. Assist with the district’s seed collection efforts.
11. Assist forestry professionals with maintain tree seedling nursery for education programs.

1. Boundary line work is current and complete.
2. State Forest identification signs and State Forest Rules and Regulations are posted and maintained.
3. Invasive plant populations are in line with the district’s management plan.
4. All trash collected and properly disposed of.

Key Result Area No. 2 - FOREST RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP

Assist forestry professional as needed in promoting private forestland stewardship

Key Activities
1. Under guidance of forestry professional, aid in Arbor Day and Earth Day events.
2. Under guidance of forestry professional, aid in educational outreach and training events.
3. Under guidance of forestry professional, provide technical work on Forest Legacy Properties.
4. Under guidance of forestry professional, assist communities during the installation phase of various grant projects.
5. Assist in advancing the objectives of a forest conservation program by addressing audiences and distributing materials.

Key Indicators
1. Number of events and trainings assisted with.
2 Number of tree plantings assisted.

Key Result Area No. 3 – WILDLAND FIRE PROTECTION

Serve as a Forest Fire Warden in the protection of life, property and wildland resources from wildfire as required under the authority granted by the Administrative Code of the Commonwealth. Under guidance of forestry professional, engage in fire Prevention, fire suppression, fire investigation and training activities as assigned.

Key Activities
1. Assist in conducting wildland fire prevention and suppression activities as assigned. Provide fire prevention information to clients and public contacts whenever appropriate.
2. Maintain qualification as a Bureau employed Forest Fire Warden.
3. Assist in training wardens, fire crew members and fire company personnel when requested.
4. Assist with prescribe fire in the district when requested.

1. Number of fire prevention programs and contacts made.
2. Number of wildfire training programs you participated in.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Employee will collect necessary data and prepare summary for final decision to be made by forestry professional or supervisor. Field work to be conducted under the guidance of forestry professional. Public inquiries outside of field of expertise must be forwarded to the appropriate individual.

In reaction to safety concerns discovered during general forestry maintenance or day-to-day work, decisions will be made on site in order to temporarily resolve the concern. Supervisor must be verbally notified of action taken and will make decisions on long term solutions
