Position Purpose:

Seasonal non-law enforcement position performing public contact, public service, and public safety work, providing visitors with information regarding the programs, resources, facilities, and activities available to them at Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, as well as other state park or state forest lands. Communicates and monitors visitor compliance with park regulations and rules related to the use of Bureau of State Park lands.

Description of Duties:

PATROLS
Work involves patrolling the grounds, boundaries, and facilities of Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, to ensure compliance with Bureau rules and regulations and ensure visitor safety. Informs the Center Manager immediately when encountered with a situation that requires law enforcement action. Work may involve the operation of motor vehicles, bicycles, and all-terrain vehicles, in order to patrol the park’s grounds. Conducts foot patrols of the Mansion grounds, park trails, as well as other use areas and park access points. Inspects buildings, structures, and other facilities to ensure security and safety. Ensures visitor safety, correcting safety hazards when found or bringing them to the attention of park management or the maintenance staff. Performs light maintenance as it pertains to public safety and public information. Ensures that the park’s natural resources are protected and being utilized properly by the visiting public. Provides assistance to visitors as needed, both in a visitor service capacity and a first-responder capacity. Ensures that park posters, bulletin boards, and signs are current and in good condition, so that information for visitors is clearly being communicated. Ensures assigned equipment and work areas are maintained in a clean and professional condition.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
Presents a professional image to the general public, through adherence to the Bureau’s mission, professional language and conduct, uniform appearance, vehicle cleanliness and preparedness, a thorough knowledge of the park and its operations, a confident and helpful demeanor, verbal and telephone skills, and practiced visitor service skills. Provides information and assistance to park visitors, as well as assists in maintaining the clarity of posted information for the visiting public. Creates and posts temporary signage, as needed. Annually, posts information and signage informing the public of safe park usage during hunting seasons. Maintains proficiency as a public guide by exercising and conveying a thorough knowledge of the park, the park's natural environment, and the park's history, as well as park rules and regulations. Staffs park offices, greeting and assisting the public as needed. Successfully utilizes the Bureau’s online reservation system to facilitate reservations and other customer service functions. May assist the park's Environmental Education Specialist in preparing for, facilitating, and presenting interpretive and recreational programs for the public. Works directly with volunteers in organizing and/or supporting their efforts, and works directly with Mansion docents to coordinate and facilitate quality experience for visitors to the Mansion. Provides tours of facilities to visitors, potential guests and reservation holders, stakeholders, and government officials.

MANSION OFFICE
When assigned to the Mansion Office, maintains the cleanliness and tidiness of the office, so that it exhibits a professional and welcoming look for the visiting public. Maintains efficient use of reference notes, avoiding clutter in and around work stations. Keeps maps and other hand-out materials stocked and accessible to visitors. Keeps an inventory of maps, hand-out materials, printing paper, printer ink, office supplies, and permits, communicating with the Park Office when supplies need replenished. Maintains a property log of lost and found articles, communicating with the ranger staff when items are received. Cleans up after self with regard to food preparation, storage, consumption, and disposal.

RESERVATION SYSTEM
Utilizes the Bureau’s online reservation system, maintaining a proficiency with the software by staying aware of updates and making required updates to the system. Uses online reservation system to create or manage reservations for park facilities, including Mansion room reservations, group reservations, pavilion rentals, and organized group tenting reservations. Will monitor incoming reservations and facility availability. Will communicate to park management/administration issues with the reservation system, specific reservations, or specific customers. Coordinates arrival reports for facilities with staff operations (e.g., clerical, ranger, maintenance, hospitality, environmental education, management) when needed. Communicates with park management/administration any issues, comments, complaints, problems, or foreseeable problems regarding park reservations. Monitors check-ins and check-outs for all Mansion guests, making the park's hospitality staff aware of cleaning needs. Monitors customer survey sheets for reported maintenance issues, and notifies maintenance staff of issues or potential issues. Utilizes the online reservation system to receive payments from customers, receive donations to the park, make points of sale, process and track refunds, print receipts, and close/reconcile session in the system. When reconciling cash drawers, documents and alerts park management to discrepancies.

EMERGENCIES
Responds to emergency situations in a manner that’s consistent with park policy, by utilizing the Emergency Manual for Kings Gap Environmental Education Center. Makes swift decisions and takes immediate corrective action when presented with an emergency situation including (but not limited to), search & rescue operations, vehicle accidents, traumatic injuries, as well as other accidents and injuries. Upon notification of an emergency, contacts and coordinates with park staff to ensure swift and proper response, rescue, treatment, scene securement, and other corrective actions. During emergencies, ensures the safety and protection of visitors and the resource. Provides first aid and CPR consistent with current certifications. Directs traffic as needed.

PREPAREDNESS
Assists in ensuring that the park’s staff is prepared to respond to all emergency situations and to deal with specific challenges the park presents to emergency response. Maintains vehicles, ensuring that they are well-equipped to respond to potential emergencies specific to Kings Gap Education Center. Assists in keeping an inventory of medical supplies. Assists in ensuring that the park’s AEDs are in constant working order.

REPORTS AND INSPECTIONS
Completes monthly and daily logs, including the status and condition of campgrounds, facilities, equipment, visitor safety, incidents, accidents, maintenance, and attendance. Assists in maintaining a property log and lost and found articles. Reports attendance, ensures working order of vehicle counting equipment. Prepares incident logs as required, utilizing the Bureau’s Incident Report Database and Kings Gap’s in-house Incident Report processing method. May assist in the recording of samples and meter readings within the park’s water distribution system. May assist in the collection, documentation, proper handling, and delivery water samples. Assists in maintaining the radio equipment inventor.

Essential Functions
