Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The investigator in this position performs fundamental investigative work in the Office of State Inspector General. This work includes responsibility for conducting employee background checks or investigations that are generated through complaints, referrals and information from various sources concerning allegations of fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct in executive agencies and/or reports of problems and deficiencies in programs, operations, and contracting with the Commonwealth agencies under the Governor’s jurisdiction.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

The investigator plans and implements investigations, either alone or with other investigators, within the established time frames determined by their supervisor.

Interviews witnesses, Commonwealth employees, and other individuals having information concerning the allegation and the person or persons who are the subject of the investigation. Travel to field sites to conduct interviews is required when appropriate.

Analyzes information, documents and developments in investigative cases and communicates the results of the investigation, both orally and in writing, as required. Maintains confidentiality with respect to all investigations in compliance with Commonwealth or agency regulations, policies, and procedures.

Under direction of a lead investigator, senior special investigator, or Investigations Manager, works with federal, state, and local agencies to obtain or provide information concerning investigations.

Performs moving and stationary surveillances to gather facts and evidence in investigations.

Uses technical electronic or photographic equipment as part of the investigative process.

Prepares or participates in the preparation of detailed and/or summary investigative reports.

Meets periodically with the supervisor or lead investigator to discuss and receive direction concerning investigations.

Obtains and reviews financial documents, records, and personnel files related to investigations.

Attends meetings, conferences, and training sessions according to established agency policies, or at the direction of their supervisor/manager.

Maintains proper care of all Commonwealth equipment, including state vehicles, computers, etc. located at their work sites according to established policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as required.

Work will require periods of overnight travel.

Decision Making:

Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Conducts initial interviews and documents reviews and formulates recommendations with guidance from senior investigators or Investigations Manager on how to proceed independently, or as part of a team, to complete the investigation and perform other related investigative activity. Assignments at the SI1 level are performed under the direction of a senior investigator or the Investigations Manager.
