Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position provides dental assistance for the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Phoenix.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

15% Provides chairside assistance to a Dentist performing dental procedures. Charts findings of the mouth as directed by the Dentist. Ensures that all tools and materials are readily available to the Dentist. Utilizes retraction, suction, irrigation, and drying during procedures.

15% Prepares workspaces, materials, and tools for dental procedures. Sterilizes tools and equipment. Mixes cements and other solutions. Positions chair and places napkin over patients.

15% Exposes and processes radiographs of patients. Mounts and labels radiographs appropriately, and evaluates them for diagnostic quality.

15% Takes impressions of teeth for study models, diagnostic casts, and athletic appliances. Pours, trims, and evaluates the quality of diagnostic casts.

10% Schedules appointments and maintains call lists.

10% Files and retrieves dental records and reports. Ensures that all records are maintained in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.

10% Prepares laboratory documentation, invoices, and packages. Prepares and reviews documentation for dental referrals and prescriptions.

5% Explains preventative care and post-procedural care instructions to patients.

5% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
3. Use and maintain various equipment and tools of the dental profession
4. Operate basic office equipment
5. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
7. Take and pass the PA Auxiliary Radiologic Procedures Examination as required by the PA State Board of Dentistry in accordance with assigned work
8. Visually observe inmates’ activities
9. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
10. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
11. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
12. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
13. Travel as required

Decision Making:

Works under the close supervision of a Dentist during dental procedures. Independently takes and processes x-rays; prepares materials and equipment; and maintains records. Work is reviewed for accuracy through direct observation and periodic reviews.
