Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provides advance professional nursing care to all inmates and staff with a physical injury, mental illness and/or developmental disability. Provide care for individuals having difficulty meeting their daily living activities at a State Correctional Facility.

Description of Duties:

Performs as charge nurse or staff nurse providing nursing care/treatment/services in a commonwealth facility.
Provides general and specialized nursing care and treatment as assigned by the Nursing Supervisors, Team Leader, and CHCA.
Assist the physician in conducting physical examinations, sick call, chronic care and specialty clinics.
Ensures all physician orders are followed as directed, seeking clarification where necessary.
Maintains accuracy of the inmate medical record within the electronic health record.
Maintain accountability and records of controlled medication and tools-i.e. Sharps, narcotics, equipment.
Provides health counselling and education to inmates and documents appropriately. Counsel non-compliance
Collects objective and subjective data on all inmates reporting to the Medical Department because of an emergency, injuries, or illness. Documents on the nursing NET in the inmate’s medical record.
Receives and provides shift report to ensure continuity of care and dissemination of all information.
Records, retrieves, and files medical information in the patient and outpatient medical records within the electronic health record.
Administers medications, treatments, immunizations and other testing/screening and documents in electronic health record. Administers visual acuity, tele binocular examinations.
Responds to medical emergencies originating outside of the Medical Department. Performs assessment and administers emergency medical treatment including First Aid and CPR. Refers to physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, physician, or hospital emergency room.
Adheres of all infection control procedures.
Assist with QI duties as directed by the supervisors and health care administrator.
Attends monthly department meetings.
Attends tasks and appointments in the electronic health record to ensure accuracy of the medical record.
Maintains educational record according to D.O.C. policy.
Acknowledges and signs department meeting minutes, educational material, and supervisory directives in a timely manner. Acknowledges and responds to emails sent to staff by all of administration.
Delegation of tasks accordingly and within the scope of practice of the discipline assigned.
Inventories supplies and equipment and maintains adequate stock in all treatment areas as assigned.

Essential functions:
Performs all aspects of general nursing care and clinical duties for which licensing and training apply.
Communicate orally, in writing or via computers with administration, staff, security and the public in a manner adhering to the code of ethics and in an acceptable manner.
Mobility to move freely around the large interior compound.
Lifts inmates in and out of bed, wheelchair, and stretcher in a safe manner with proper body mechanics.
Negotiate stairways in housing units to provide nursing assistance or medication delivery.
Stand for long period.
Be able to lift >/=50lbs.
Work all shifts and work in excess of normal scheduled hours/days to accommodate staffing needs.
Maintain CPR and First Aid certification as required by the D.O.C. policy.
Operate telephone, copy machine, fax machine, AED, EKG machine, emergency response vehicle along with various other medical equipment/devices.
Provide care, custody and control of inmates.
Read, comprehend, stay current and follow policies and procedures set forth by the Department of
Corrections and Bureau of Health Care.
Represent the medical department as a professional and refrain from unethical behavior, speech, and abide by the code of ethics of the D.O.C.
Be aware of cultural sensitivities and treat diversity in a fair manner.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Work assignments are made verbally, in writing or via email. Shift work is designated to each shift regardless of the staff assigned. Individual assignments are designated to each staff member are due as designated by the supervisors at varying times. Delegate as needed to complete duties assigned and within the scope of practice of the licensee. The Nursing Supervisors and/or Correctional Health Care Administrator directly supervise the performance of the Registered Nurses, skills, and job performance and judge by comparison to and evaluation of the achievement of preset objectives. The goals and objectives are reviewed at least annually with supervisory staff and a rating given.
