Position Purpose:

The Registered Nurse plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on standards of nursing practice and standards of patient care.

Description of Duties:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care and treatment services. The Registered Nurse assesses the patients’ physical, psychosocial and/or mental health status. The Registered Nurse performs ongoing assessment of patient and patient care needs; utilizes nursing diagnosis and treatment in developing and implementing ITP; complies with documentation policy and ITP manual; prescribes, coordinates, and delegates nursing care; collaborates with other facility disciplines; provides nursing expertise to interdisciplinary treatment team; assesses, records, reports, and evaluates vital signs, symptoms, and reactions or responses to medication and treatment; participates in staff development programs; provides ongoing orientation/education and on-the-job training to non-professional nursing personnel; utilizes least restrictive measures, follows hospital/nursing policy in the care and documentation of patients in seclusion/exclusion/restraint/special observation/hands on; adheres to infection control/HIV policies and procedures; utilizes crisis prevention techniques; accurately complies with medication policy and completion of physicians orders; applies knowledge of Hospital/ Nursing policies and procedures; initiates, conducts and documents nursing process groups; maintains awareness of ward conditions, therapeutic milieu, and patient activities, allowing patient appropriate choices, empowering them through the recovery process. Acts as patient advocate; participates in Nursing PI and Hospital QA activities; utilizes therapeutic communication; provides knowledgeable daily communication; participates in nursing and facility committees/activities; provides health promotion and maintenance through teaching, guidance, and counseling; assigns and directs the work of professional personnel and supervises assigned non-professional staff; applies professional and psychiatric nursing concepts, techniques, and procedures in patient care; interacts with others in a cooperative manner to develop effective working relationships; prepares and submits reports as required; develops, recommends and directs changes in the administration of Nursing care and treatment methods and plans; provides guidance to paraprofessional staff in implementing, receiving and modifying the patient’s plan of care; performs other related duties as requested.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Directs and monitors staff work on areas.
2. Transcribes Physician’s orders.
3. Prepares and administers prescribed medications/treatments.
4. Participates in Treatment team.
5. Conducts nursing groups/patient education.
6. Carries out the daily routine of individualized patient treatment plans.
7. Educates, guides, encourages, and assists patients with activities of daily living.
8. Provides routine physical care to patients.
9. Positions patients and utilizes approved lifting techniques.
10. Performs CPR, Heimlich maneuver, responds to and participates in medical emergencies
and emergency evacuations.
11. Responds to psychiatric emergencies, utilizes verbal and/or physical crisis
management techniques.
12. Assists patients and staff in maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment.
13. Accurately reports observations orally and in writing; ability to read and document
legibly and accurately.
14. Function as a patient advocate.
15. Operate and maintain necessary equipment.
16. Able to sit, stand, walk unaided, climb up and down stairs, lift, transition
patients, kneel, crawl, squat, crouch, bend at waist, twist, and/or rotate as needed.
17. Able to follow safety/infection control measures.
18. Obtain and maintain current crisis response/interventions and CPR certification and
appropriately uses these skills.

Makes independent decisions of a routine nature based upon professional training, job knowledge and competency. Collaborates with Nurse Supervisors, Nurse Managers and/or Chief Nurse Executive for any unusual, high-risk, critical incident/situation.
