Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. This position will serve within the Environmental Review Division within the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office’s Archaeology Curation Section under the immediate direction of the Archaeology Curator Supervisor/Senior Curator and is responsible for assisting with federal archaeology programs including Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the preservation of archaeological collections. The position will assist with meeting legal responsibilities under the NAGPRA; assist with the management of digital archaeological collections data; and assist with preservation of archaeological resources. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Advise the Archaeology Curation Supervisor on compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), supporting both the ethical and legal responsibilities under NAGPRA and educational mission of the PHMC. Participate in ongoing professional development related to NAGPRA consultation, archaeological resources, and other best practices as appropriate. Assist Archaeology Curation Supervisor in implementing guidance for and the long-term care and preservation of archaeological collections in accordance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., researching, locating, and identifying artifacts and data entry). Prepare educational, technical, and procedural materials; provides information; and conducts training programs about historic preservation, federal and state programs, and historic and archaeological resources. Assist Archaeology Curator Supervisor in the development and implementation of ways to manage digital archaeological collections data. Conducts consultation with appropriate indigenous partners to inform reinterpretation of The State Museum of Pennsylvania’s Indigenous collections and exhibits to ensure compliance with NAGPRA. Manage archaeological archive records (field reports, maps, images, and reports) according to established standards. Assist with updates to Archaeological Curation Guidelines and other relevant procedures and processes. Assist with the direction, training, and supervision of volunteers and interns. Attend and participate in professional meetings and conferences. Provide information to the Archaeology Curator Supervisor/ Senior Curator to assist with advancing and implementing the PA Historical & Museum Commission’s (PHMC) Strategic Plan and Statewide Historic Preservation plan. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and private groups and individuals concerned with archaeological matters. Deliver lectures, contribute to publications, attend and participate in professional meetings and conferences, teach classes, and otherwise engages in educational activities designed to make the state’s citizens aware of their archeological heritage, as directed. Adhere to PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position and immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area and report same to supervisor. Contribute to PA SHPO and PHMC publications such as the Blog of the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Office and Pennsylvania Heritage Magazine. Perform other duties as required to assist the PA SHPO with fulfilling priorities. |

Research inquiries for information and prepare responses. Conduct site visits and participate in meetings as needed to advise and assist PA SHPO partners. |
