Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. This is unskilled work assisting in the operation of steam generating boilers and related equipment in the boiler plant at the South Mountain Restoration Center. As a Utility Plant Helper, the employee is learning boiler plant skills from a qualified Utility Plant Operator 2/Facility Operations Manager 4, and participating in on-the-job training in the practices, methods, and techniques of the operation and maintenance of the boiler plant. This position has a rotating work schedule. An employee assigned to this position may be required to work the evening and/or night shift when required for repairs/projects. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Assists the Utility Plant Operators 2 in operating, regulating, and maintaining the following equipment necessary for the generation of steam: feed water pumps, forced draft fans, condensate pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, water softeners, chemical feed pumps, air dryers, PRV stations and pressure, level and temperature controls. Cleans plant areas by scrubbing floors, walls, handrails, walks, etc. Assists the UPO2 in recording plant operating conditions every two hours, maintaining shift production and usage records. Assists the UPO2 in checking operation of condensate return pumps and sump pumps in buildings outside plant. Assists the UPO2 in testing water for proper softness, adding salt to brine tank as necessary. Works with the UPO2 to test boiler water for alkalinity, sulfite and phosphate residuals and solids concentration, adding chemicals as necessary to maintain control limits. Assists the UPO2 in performing assigned preventative maintenance work. Assists the UPO2 in repairing plant equipment as assigned. Assists the UPO2 in installing new equipment and making modifications to existing equipment. Assists the UPO2 in preparing and painting equipment and structure. Assists the UPO2 in operating emergency generator plant, manually transferring electrical load when necessary. Performs related work as required. |
