Position Purpose:

The employee occupying this position is responsible and accountable for the safety and security of patients, employees, students, and visitors of the hospital buildings and grounds. The employee carries out the following job tasks under the supervision of the Security Supervisor, or in their absence, the Safety Manager

Description of Duties:

In order to create a safe environment for patients, employees, student and visitors, the Security Officer patrols all buildings to observe and correct fire hazards, acts of trespass, vandalism, theft, security and unauthorized persons. In order to have the safest possible conditions for patients, employees, students and visitors, the Security Officer patrols the hospital grounds by driving a security vehicle or by walking and checking for unlocked car doors and investigating accidents and traffic violations. In order to effectively communicate with co-workers secure corrective action, and maintain required records, the Security Officer documents and performs necessary reports such as a Shift Patrol Log, Incident Reports, Hazardous Notice, Maintenance Work Orders, and verbal and written reminders. In order to minimize the harmful effects of emergencies, the Security Officer responds to emergency calls by assisting with patient restraints, evacuation, fires aid, and fire suppression and system restoration. In order to safe guard Commonwealth property, the Security Officer participates in various theft prevention measures by visually and physically checking “High Risk Theft” areas, patrolling hospital grounds, patient wards and by conducting searches for patients, employees, students and visitors; in order to maintain the optimum level of operation for the entire facility. The Security Officer carriers out transports and deliveries by conveying patient and staff members to various destinations, performs bank runs and returns eloping patients. In order to maintain a safe and secure hospital environment, the Security Officer performs incidental custodial, maintenance duties and other related duties by following Supervisor’s instructions and/or circumstantial indications. Security Officer conducts investigation concerning Workplace Violence Theft criminal activity. Voluntary and Mandatory overtime will be required when necessary.

Officers perform various tasks in the security department that require officers to talk on the phone and use portable radios to except calls and make decisions on where to direct the calls. How to conduct an investigation, how to interview staff patients and when not to. Make decisions on whether to write a work order to maintenance reporting their findings while they are on patrol.
