Position Purpose:

This position is assigned to the Database Management Section within the Health and Human Services Technology Services Office (HHSTSO)/Enterprise Technology Services Office (ETSO), Office of Administration serving the HHS Delivery Center. The person in this position is responsible for the backup and recovery of databases, adhering to backup/recovery/DR procedures and policies, ensuring backups, recoveries and data refreshes are completed timely and successfully, reviews DBMS log files and follows and enforces necessary Database security practices and policies for SQL Server Database Management System Platforms. This position also serves as secondary support of backups/recovery/DR with Oracle Database Management System Platforms.

This is an advanced technical position. The person in this position serves as a database support administrator in the Database Management Section within the Health and Human Services Technology Services Office (HHSTSO)/Enterprise Technology Services Office (ETSO), Office of Administration serving the HHS Delivery Center.

Maintain detailed knowledge required of current and future backup and recovery options and procedures available for SQL Server databases running On Prem and Azure platforms.

Create and maintain scripts, review DBMS logs and adhere to archive and deletion procedures for database backups, archival logs, transactional logs and export files.

Maintain knowledge of Data Domain database back-end storage, review metrics/graphs and report any issues/anomalies to vendor.

Maintain knowledge of backup and recovery processes and procedures available for Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases.

Perform code and script creation, maintenance of programs or procedures, develop and implement the processes required to support the DHS disaster recovery plan pertaining to Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases as needed. Train other staff also for the same, as needed.

Perform daily reviews of backup and export policies and logs for successful execution and resolve issues if encountered.

Review and process data integrity scripts and data fix support for Oracle databases to meet business needs and requirements.

Perform and lead database centric functions and activities in support of application migrations, enhancements, and release levels across the Microsoft SQL Server databases.

Assist and support Oracle database activities in support of application migrations, enhancements and release levels.

Interface with application and/or deployment analysts and Program Office representatives to investigate any database problems and/or issues that may arise during database deployments and provide guidance and feedback.

Provide database status reports and metrics to management on issues with backups, exports, data fixes, deployments or other database anomalies when necessary.

Assist with project management of database integrity centric activities such as maintenance, deployments and upgrades.

Researches, becomes familiar, tests and remains current with new release levels of DBMS software as they are published.

Interfaces with applications and development analysts to investigate, test and research any database integrity problems and/or issues that may arise and provide technical guidance.

Participates in database processes to ensure database integrity and best database security practices are adhered to.

Train and assist staff as needed regarding database integrity tasks, processes and procedures.

Participate in the development of changes and enhancements for database integrity and maintenance processes, practices and procedures.

Attend and participate in work and professional development programs/workshops/classes to maintain, enhance and grow current knowledge and skills.

Apply patches and/or hot fixes to Database Management System server and/or client-side software.

Train lower-level staff along with other IT technical staff as necessary and provide documentation when needed.

All other related duties as required.
