Position Purpose: Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. Performs a variety of engineering duties associated with the location, and/or design, and/or analysis, and/or construction of bridges and structures. Prepares, models, or reviews complete sets of plans for bridge and structural projects, or prepares or reviews phases of the most complex projects, such as multi-span concrete or steel structures and develops needed engineering calculations to design simple structures such as culverts, simple span steel and concrete bridges, and substructure units. |

Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. Apply engineering principles and practices associated to the location, and/or design, and/or analysis, and/or construction of bridges, concrete structures, steel structures, pre-stressed and reinforced concrete structures, and foundations. Review and/or prepares bridge and structural plans, completes engineering submissions and calculations related to bridge and structural design items by utilizing knowledge of engineering principles, design standards, and codes. Utilizes sound engineering judgement and practices to recommend safety improvements for incorporation into bridge and structural design projects. Maintain thorough knowledge of the primary engineering reference works and other sources of engineering data used in the design, analysis, and construction of bridges and other structures. Prepare, Model, and/or review computations, plans, and specifications for bridges and other structures. Reviews bridge and structural design plans or other design submissions prepared by consultants and/or in-house personnel such as single span concrete or steel structures and/or portions of multi-span concrete or steel structures Travels to field locations to perform field investigations and depict terrain and its effect on structural supports. Design and/or review the design of piles, footings, foundations, structural frameworks, and other steel and concrete members necessary to support the architectural design. Perform and/or review engineering computations to determine weight loads and stresses. Prepare design submissions, such as, Hydrologic and Hydraulic Report; Type, Size and Location Report; and Foundation Approval with guidance from the Squad Leader, Design Manuals and Technical Guidelines. Also review design submissions prepared by consultant engineers for completeness and accuracy. Perform engineering computations, stress analysis, and design work for new structures and rehabilitation of existing bridges and structures. Prepare and enter bid documents and supporting information for project in ECMS, including preparing or reviewing cost estimates, construction schedule, job and materials specifications, and drawings and assisting in answering pre-bid questions. Utilize Computer Aided Design (CAD). Assist, review, or perform all associated drafting and detailing work, the computation of earthwork, steel and concrete quantities, and the preparation of required transmittal forms. Attend training as required. Assist in training lower-level draftsmen and draftsmen designers. Prepare correspondence as required. Prepare and review any necessary permit applications for submission to Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) / Army Corp of Engineers (ACOE) for work / projects being designed or managed by in-house unit (ex. 9999, GP-11,etc). Design and check the design of overhead sign and Variable Message Signs (VMS) / Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) structures in accordance with applicable bridge and traffic standard drawings. Collaborate with Bridge Inspection staff as needed to provide necessary design support to address Bridge Inspection 0 & 1 Maintenance / Repair Priorities. Enhance positive communication among all Bridge Unit Staff to ensure awareness of goals, objectives, and letting commitments. Assist in the achievement of the District’s established goals, objectives, and customer service initiatives as defined in the District Dashboard for Bridge Unit related items. Assist Construction and other units / customers in the final interpretation of approved bridge plans. Offer technical guidance to Civil Engineer Trainees and interns without directing responsibility for their work. Perform other related work as directed. CAREER DEVELOPMENT 1. Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Safety: 1. Assess your environment and be responsible for your safety, the safety of co-workers, and the public. 2. Attend required safety training and adhere to the requirements of all safety manuals, policies, and laws. 3. Immediately report to your supervisor any incident, unsafe practice, or near miss. 4. When in an enclosed environment (office buildings, confined spaces, flagger stations, equipment pinch points, etc.), know your evacuation process and escape route, your communication protocols, and appropriately react in the event of an incident. Succession Planning: Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA): Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0 hour day. |
