Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position directs the administration of a complete food service operation at the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution (SCI) _Mahanoy.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

70% Plans, organizes, and directs the overall operations of the food service department. Determines staffing needs and priorities based on established facility and department goals and objectives. Prepares and submits an annual department budget and manages allocation factors to include controlling overtime costs. Develops, revises, and implements functional work processes and procedures. Establishes, schedules, and implements department orientation and on-the-job training programs for staff and inmate workers.

20% Manages and inspects food service areas, equipment, and food to ensure compliance with established safety and sanitation standards. Approves or disapproves requisitions for food, supplies, and equipment based on recommendations made by the Corrections Food Service Supervisor. Conducts routine inspections of equipment to ensure satisfactory, safe, and efficient operation. Develops new recipes and revises or modifies existing recipes to meet nutritional requirements.

5% Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings. Prepares and submits routine and/or specialized reports. Participates in administrative staff meetings. Maintains personnel, budgetary, and other work records in accordance with ACA and facility requirements. Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

5% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Manage Food Service operations through subordinate staff
3. Supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate staff
4. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
5. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
6. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
7. Work mandatory overtime, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty
at the time of notification
8. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
9. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in food service operations
10. Operate basic office equipment
11. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
12. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
13. Visually observe inmates’ activities
14. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
15. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
16. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
17. Travel as required

Managers are given the latitude, within DOC/SCI policy, to make decisions that affect the overall operations of the food service department. An administrative supervisor reviews performance through work results to ensure quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of work. The administrative supervisor may be consulted for any unusual issues.
