Position Purpose:

This position provides supervisory oversight to Corrections Food Service Instructors and inmate workers in the performance of routine and specialized tasks in food service operations at the Department of Corrections (DOC) State Correctional Institution SCI MAHANOY

Description of Duties:

50% Supervises subordinate staff and inmate workers in the performance of routine and specialized food service work. Establishes and implements functional work processes and procedures. Provides orientation and training for subordinate staff and inmate workers assigned to food service operations, which includes reviewing applicable regulations, job requirements, and safety tips, as well as, providing special instructions in the preparation of therapeutic and/or religious diet menu items, food waste reduction, recipe adjustments, etc.

30% Oversees and inspects food service areas, equipment, and food to ensure compliance with established safety and sanitation standards. Reviews inmate census data and ensures that there is an adequate source of food available to satisfy regular and/or special dietary requirements. Reviews and recommends approval or disapproval of requisitions for food, supplies, and equipment based on past and projected usage. Supervises the installation, operation, and maintenance of all equipment to ensure satisfactory, safe, and efficient operation.

15% Plans, coordinates, and schedules sufficient staffing coverage. Submits reports on tool inventories, safety, production, and staff assignments. Maintains records in accordance with ACA and facility requirements. Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

5% Performs other related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Exercise therapeutic care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate staff
3. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
4. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
5. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
6. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification
7. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
8. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in food service operations
9. Operate basic office equipment
10. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
11. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
12. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
13. Visually observe inmates’ activities
14. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
15. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
16. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
17. Travel as required

Supervisors are given the latitude, within DOC/SCI policy, to make decisions that affect the daily operations of their assigned work area. A Corrections Food Service Manager (CFSM) reviews performance through work results to ensure quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of work. The CFSM may be consulted for any unusual issues.
