Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position is responsible for instructing and overseeing inmate workers in the manufacturing, production, or processing of products or services within SCI Chester’s Correctional Industries (CI) Optical Lab.

This position may perform the identified duties in areas other than the assigned CI factory(s) consistent with operational and/organizational requirements.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

45% Oversees, instructs, and trains inmate workers in the techniques and methods involved in the manufacturing, production, or processing of products and/or services, which includes reviewing the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of tools and equipment. Trains inmate workers in the use of applicable computer programs for the purpose of entering appropriate data for completing daily operational reports and production logs. Completes/submits inmate worker attendances/absences for liability and payroll purposes. Provides input to inmate progress reports.

35% Maintains a safe and secure work environment. Conducts searches of inmate workers and work areas for contraband. Monitors inmate movement during operational hours and processes sign-out sheets. Ensures tool control and caustic/toxic supply inventory records are maintained in accordance with applicable regulations and policies.

10% Utilizes SAP to monitor plant activity including, but not limited to: open orders, shipping, invoicing, purchasing, available raw materials, and finished goods. Initiates and submits purchase requests for equipment, supplies, and services in order to maintain effective and efficient factory operations.

5% Participates in the development of product specifications and production goals. Analyzes records and reports to ensure the proper production rate of products and/or services. Evaluates and makes recommendations for new and/or updated equipment to improve the quality of output and maximize the efficiency of operations.

5% Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates
2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary
3. Lead and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices used in the production or processing of products and services
4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp
5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
6. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking
7. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies
8. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty
9. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
10. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in manufacturing process
11. Operate basic office equipment
12. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform
13. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing
14. Establish and maintain effective working
15. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
16. Visually observe inmates’ activities
17. Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff
18. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
19. Travel as required
