Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This position implements nursing care plans and treatment services to individuals with mental or physical injury or illness, dysfunctional behavior and/or a development disability at State Correctional Institution (SCI) Benner Township.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

80% - Implements nursing care plans as assigned and directed by the Registered Nurse or Physician by checking vital signs, administering medications, performing treatments, utilizing restorative techniques and activities of daily living, and reinforcing education in order to ensure quality service is provided. Identifies inmates’ needs by appropriate observations and reports physical and emotional behavior of inmates. Assists in preparing medical incident reports on injuries or sudden illnesses of inmates. Prepares and administers medications ordered by physician under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician and records the administration of medications and treatments. Administers oral, intramuscular and subcutaneous, and IV therapy functions (if education and training requirements have been met) and only under supervision as required, to inmates under the direction of a clinician’s order and in accordance with functions as defined in State law/code and established agency/institution policies and procedures. Administers treatments, immunizations, tuberculin and other testing and screenings. Performs direct care, or assists ambulatory, non-ambulatory, handicapped inmates with activities of daily living and hygiene to ensure basic physical care needs are met. Provides health counseling and routine education to patients. Responds to emergencies and administers first aid, CPR or AED when appropriate medical conditions are present. Adheres to all infection control and quality improvement procedures and requirements.

5% - Receives and provides assignment reports to ensure continuity of patient care and dissemination of all information. Communicates necessary information to Shift Commander, custody staff, and Corrections Health Care Administrator in the event of medical emergencies or situations that arise which affect the normal operations of the department. Records, retrieves, and files information in the electronic health record. Reviews medical records and prepares reports for inmate transfer or release. Ensures timely completion and submission of daily and monthly written reports, as requested or assigned in order to meet expected deadlines. Maintains records of all controlled substances and narcotics.

5% - Sterilizes supplies and instruments using chemical and steam methods. Inventories supplies and equipment and maintains adequate stock of all treatment areas.

5% - Maintains job skills by attendance at mandatory in-service, out-service and meetings.

5% - Performs other related duties as required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

9. Visually observe inmates’ activities
10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels
11. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet)
12. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing
13. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
14. Travel as required

Identifies abnormalities in physical conditions and/or sub-optimal response to existing treatment plans. Observations are reported to the Registered Nurse, Physician, Physician Assistant, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Dentist, or Psychiatrist for review and direction. Supervision is received from a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse Supervisor who reviews the work in progress, through reports, and observations.
