Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Performs carpentry work on bridge and roadway-related facilities and structures within the county maintenance organization.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Provides building trades support to the County Maintenance Division to meet facility needs and model stockpile criteria.

Interprets detailed sketches and blueprints to perform skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Utilizes independent judgment in individual trade performance to provide a high level of service.

Performs a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of structures and bridges.

Perform a variety of tasks in the repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds, equipment, and machinery in order to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Knowledge of carpentry, welding, masonry, electrical and plumbing. These trades are performed as a journeyman level.

Supplements the mason on the bridge crew during construction months.

Operates equipment such as department owned tandem and single axle dump trucks, front loader or high lift, tractor mowers, or similar equipment.

Maintains and repairs structures, drainage culverts, bridges, and other roadway structures by building forms, pouring and finishing concrete, welding metal support structures and replacement parts, painting surfaces as appropriate in order to maintain and extend the useful life of these structures.

Performs a variety of masonry and carpentry work in connection with maintaining the County maintenance buildings, retaining walls, foundations, concrete block walls, buildings, and structures by building forms, finishing concrete, and sealing when appropriate. Carpentry work includes building or repairing partitions, concrete forms, walls, cabinets, counter tops and office furniture.

Performs a variety of manual laboring duties using both motorized and non-motorized hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, lutes, chainsaws, compressors, jack hammers, tampers, hand mowers and trimmers, routers, patching machines and heating kettles; selects and uses tools properly for job to minimize wear and breakage; reports missing or broken equipment.

Performs plumbing work in connection with maintaining the county maintenance buildings. Plumbing to include repairs and maintenance of pipes and fixtures.

Performs electrical work in connection with maintaining the county maintenance buildings and stockpiles. Including the installation, repair and maintenance of electric circuits, wall plugs, and lighting fixtures in an around buildings. Makes repairs to roofs and installs flashing and gutters on buildings.

Operates a variety of construction equipment in the performance of duties such as arc welders, mig welders, pipe threaders, concrete saws, chain saws, air compressors, hammer drills, jackhammers, chipping hammers, de-scaler, generators, pumps, carpentry tools, power tools, forklifts, front end loader, personal lifting devices, bucket trucks, and a wide variety of hand tools and other power and pneumatic tools.

Performs minor mechanical repairs to equipment in the field and in the county maintenance shed in order to have the equipment operational. Performs welding and fabrication repairs to construction equipment and snow plows.

Performs and documents pre-operation and post-operation checks, material usage, and makes necessary field adjustments to permit safe operation and minimize wear of equipment and tools.

Follows proper call-off procedures. Schedules non-emergency absences in advance; observes start/stop times, breaks, and meal times; works efficiently and effectively alone and with others, is available for overtime and emergency responses.

Completes work in accordance with issued work order from supervisor.

Maintains a safe working area and maintains safe work practices. Uses personal protective equipment. Maintains awareness of work area, helping others to avoid risks and hazards. Properly reports personal injuries and equipment accidents immediately to supervisor.

Under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Manager, the incumbent oversees fulfillment of the environmental management requirements identified in the Maintenance, MORIS, and Bridge Maintenance Manuals and processes designated for this position in the District's Strategic Environmental Management Program (SEMP) Manual for Sound Environmental Practices.

Attends environmental training designated for this position in the District's SEMP Manual for Sound Environmental Practices.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Succession Planning:
Take an active role in succession planning by completing a Career Development Plan in collaboration with the supervisor. In conjunction with the supervisor, participate in knowledge management/transfer by identifying key aspects of the job and sharing explicit and tacit program/technical knowledge with other employees.

Department Green Plan Policy:
Commit to following the Department’s Green Plan Policy (Pub 712) and the associated principles. Failure to comply with the Department’s Green Plan Policy shall be documented in the employee’s performance review.

Fair Labor Standards Act:
Unless directed otherwise by your supervisor or manager, comply with stated work hours for the 7.5/8.0-hour day.
