Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 40% - Supervises Registered Nurses and other subordinate staff in the performance of clinical and administrative duties. Provides orientation and training for subordinate staff. Ensures adequate staff coverage is provided on all shifts, creates schedules and allocates overtime, and assigns meal periods and rest breaks to ensure uninterrupted service. Meets established goals and objectives for the provision of intake, assessment, and medical clearance for transfer; conducts staff meetings; and performs the full range of supervisory duties over subordinate staff. 35% - Implements and oversees nursing care plans as assigned and directed by the Corrections Health Care Administrator (CHCA) by checking vital signs, administering medications, performing treatments, utilizing restorative techniques and activities of daily living, and reinforcing education in order to ensure quality service is provided. Assesses inmate needs and reassigns staff as necessary to complete nursing care and treatment. Administers oral, intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous medication to inmates under the direction of a clinician’s orders and in accordance with functions as defined in state law and established agency/institution policies and procedures. Assists the physician in conducting physical examinations and in general, chronic care and specialty clinics. Administers treatments, immunizations, tuberculin, and other testing and screenings. Provides health counseling and education to patients. Performs direct care, or assists ambulatory, non-ambulatory, handicapped inmates with activities of daily living and hygiene to ensure basic physical care needs are met. Performs assessment and administers emergency medical treatment including first aid, CPR, or AED and refers to a CRNP (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner), Physician Assistant, Physician, or local hospital emergency room. Adheres to all infection control and quality improvement procedures and requirements. 10% - Receives and provides shift reports to ensure continuity of patient care and dissemination of all information. Communicates necessary information to Shift Commander, custody staff, and CHCA in the event of medical emergencies or situations that arise which affect the normal operations of the department. Records, retrieves, and files information in the electronic health record. Reviews medical records and prepares reports for inmate transfer or release. Ensures timely completion and submission of daily and monthly written reports, as requested or assigned in order to meet expected deadlines. Maintains records of all controlled substances and narcotics. 5% - Sterilizes supplies and instruments using chemical and steam methods. Inventories supplies and equipment and maintains adequate stock of all treatment areas. 5% - Maintains and improves job skills by attendance at mandatory in-service, out-service, meetings and voluntary training programs and knowing DOC and facility policy and procedure changes when they occur. 5% - Performs other related duties as required. Maintain an active license to practice as a RN issued by the PA State Board of Nursing 10. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 11. Visually observe inmates’ activities 12. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, alarms, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 13. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 14. Work overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement 15. Travel as required |
